How much of a differance???

I see alot of guys are making there own custom air intakes. Does this mod make any differance. I was wondering if the custom ones allow more air flow? But my one concern is warm air draw from the motor. With a stock one you have a sealed air chanel from the front of the car. With a open air filter you are sucking air from the motor bay. Please fill me in!
