Question

My '95 SC's trim piece around the shifter had become rather scratched (the large piece with the shift indicators, ECT switch, etc) so I decided to see about getting a new one.

I contacted the dealer and to my surprise it was only $45 bucks, including the lighted indicator piece that tells you what gear you are in!

Now here is the strange part, the part was matte black, the part in my car was high gloss black. We looked at several SC 3/400s in the lot and half had gloss, other half had matte. Several guys at the dealership were baffled and said come to think of it, they had seen the part both ways as well but there is only one part number. I went ahead and installed the panel and it matches the large matte piece that goes around the entire console perfectly but the ash tray and stereo/ac are gloss. One other weird thing, the lamps in the shift indicator were made to look white/blue instead of the warm goldish color the other one had. So I replaced them with my bulbs from my old panel.

So how many of you out there have gloss and how many have matte??? My car has a black interior but I doubt that would make the differance.

Default Scratched panels...

Yeah... Mine "was" glossy... I noticed scratched panels on mine earlier in the year, and instead of getting a new part. I decided to spray it metallic silver. I sprayed a couple of thin coats of primer to cover the scratches, then about 7 thin coats of metallic silver car paint. I havent had time to polish it for that glossy look (at the moment it feels like the surround, but in silver) but it is impressive. a futuristic look if you please I'm happy with it, and I've got about 4 other friends who want to do that to their car. It's a nice job for AU$12...

Cheers,

Toan.

Wow cool idea, that would be a lot cheaper than buying aluminum panels or something and probably look better. Oh well, I guess I will just have to stick with my matte panel. It looks good but the more I look at it compared to the ash tray, the more I think I will eventually have to pop for a new ash tray. Oh well. hehe

Mine is glossy ('95 SC400 w/ tan interior). New ash tray eh? My ash tray broke a little while ago and I was quoted a price.... 140$ Needless to say, i was able to fix the ash tray and am much happier with the 140$ in my pocket

I dont have a digital camera, so cant do stuff on the fly.... I have to do it the old (and expensive) fashioned method with a camera and a scanner

I'll get some pics when I get some new film and waste a roll..

Lightbulb Trim Panel

Had a broken button on my ash tray....Took it to Lexus back in 92 or so, and they replaced the whole ash tray including the cover which turned out to be matte black when the rest was glossy. I didnt think too much of it at the time. After nine years I like the matte black better, it looks like it might hold up beter over time. Thanks for the info because I want to change the trim around the shifter also.
