Question Average Engine Life In Miles SC300 SC400

I currently drive a Benz. The average life for the 3.0 is about 300,000 miles. Due to constant repairs I seriously considering the LEXUS car for reliability.
Waht is the expected engine life for the "STOCK" SC300 and the SC400????? I can't find this info anywhere. (I've looked and looked)

Thank you

Looks like I'll be looking into a SC400.
I've been driving the wrong car all these years.

Thank You O.L.T.

i cant reinforce enough just how strong these engines are. im currently at about 175k miles on my sc400, and its rock solid. its had two tune-ups (at 92k and 165k) and the proper maintenance, and it still drives like a dream. i read somewhere (in the cl forums) that when toyota designed this motor, they designed it for about 350-400 horsepower and tuned it down to 250-290 for the sake of super-reliability; same goes for the trannies they put in these cars. if you find one thats in good shape and has been taken care of, you shouldnt have any major problems to worry about.

There was a story in Lexus Magazine about some guy who has 555,000 miles (without any major repairs) on his '92 LS400. Since it's the same engine.

I would think the SC300 would be more lasting actually. The SC300 simply doesn't have enough power to brake and it is capable of handling around 700 hp when turboed. Also, SC300 for example wouldn't have anoying power steering pump leaking on alternator problems.

You still have to do the same maintenance on both.

Actually that guy in the lexus magazine had a 1990 LS400, he bought it new in 1989 and since he owned three apple orchards and needed to check up on all of them everyday, the miles just racked up.

Anyway, These cars are very reliable, but recently a freind of mine mentioned that my engine (4.0 V8) should have been recalled in its second year due to a head gasket problem and this is likely to fail somewhere around 100K miles. Is this true? I have NEVER heard of any problem with a lexus V8, Anyone know something about this?

Never heard anything about head gasket problems. Ask your friend to provide some proof, source, documentation, whatever. If he can't, chalk it up as another vicious rumor and forget it.

My '93 SC4 has passed 120K, has had its power steering leak dealt with, and looks and drives like new. Totally reliable, amazing automobile. The first car I've owned that I don't worry about carrying tools on a long trip (well, okay, but it's just a Leatherman)

There was a recall early on. One of the few recalls actually. The dealerships personally called all the owners to let them know about it. I am not sure about the details.

You're right about it being a '90 LS400. I threw out the magazine already.

Default 300K

I know a lawyer who has a 92 SC400 red, (that looks cleaner than my car..even now!)...had 300K on his car and that was 5 years ago. He said that it's still going strong and the only major thing he had to do was replace the transmission at 250K. Just regular tuneups and oil changes. These cars will run indefinitely

I'm planning on keeping this till I get old anyway.

Mine is at 160K and still going strong

has anyone's lexus v8 engine ever died "naturally", where it just broke down? aside from accidents and such. i've never heard anyone's engine dying. i wrecked mine awhile back at 160k, so i'll never know my car's limit (RIP). it's pretty interesting this thread popped up today, because i was going to have a bet with my friend that IF he get's a 70's camaro w/ about 90k miles, and IF I get a lexus sc400 w/ 192k miles (dirt cheap by the way, if it wasn't i wouldn't even look at it), that my engine would last twice as long as his would, considering the lex is in the shape that at least my other car was. hahahaha, sucker. (btw, if chevy's reliability back then is better than it is now, please let me know, but this bet sounds like a gimme)

I own a 93 Soarer 2.5GT. I've replaced the rear upper control arm and the radiator top tank (both due for replacement because of age), and I've serviced the car regularly, no other mechanical problems... the car drives like a dream (I just change the oil/filter every 5000kms, and get the garage to do the check up every 10000kms), and I'm running the stock turbo motor (1JZGTE) with stock turbos and 140000kms clocked up, no problems with the turbos nor the engine, these cars (either SC3 or 4) are super reliable.

I'm at 235000KM and the engine is running like a dream. Everytime someone gets into my car they always compliment me on its smooth and quiet ride. If things keep going the way they are, the engine is going to outlast the body. We use SALT to clear our roads in the winter
