Default 95 sc 400

Looking at a ‘95 with 170k on it that’s local and the owner wants no less than $7000, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s a good deal or not.
I’ll post a few pics of the posting and list the couple of things I’ve found when I checked it out.

Several things aftermarket shown in pics (exhaust, CAI, coilovers)
Aftermarket front bumper (bottom lip scraped up from being low on these crappy GA roads)
Seems to have been repainted (not sure if matches factory paint code)
Has idle surge (seems to be IAC I think)
AC works fine but heat doesn’t blow (not that I need it in GA)
Speedometer seems inaccurate as I stomped it on the highway and it wouldn’t go past 80 while I am very confident I was going faster - might be the fact has the stock Supra wheels and wheel spacers plus the coilovers and might just need to be recalibrated
Slight oil leak - power steering does not seem to be leaking

May be a good deal, depending on what you may be looking for. It looks like a clean car, you may need to raise it up to verify some of the underside mods. You may need to look up what is causing the issue with the speedometer, may be a bad wheel speed sensor, but I'm new to this platform so I may be wrong. Best case take it to a mechanic and get a pre-purchase inspection and get all your questions answered.

Luckily I have a mechanic friend that is willing to go check it out and the fella is willing to bring us to a shop and put it on a lift for my buddy to look it over. He seems to be very confident with the reliability of it and open with all the things that do happen to be wrong with it. I just wanted to make sure that $7000 for a 95 with 170k and the issues that it does have isn't over paying since I offered $6000 and he said 7 was his lowest.

So much work was done to that car you could be inheriting someone else's shoddy work.

Pretty much where I was leaning. Found a mostly stock and well taken care of 98 Sc300 (auto) with 101k on it for 9500 so probably bout to just take a weekend trip and pick that up instead. I liked the 400 since I am looking more for a nice clean cruiser when I want to take a brake from my F150 and not interested in heavy modding. But hell I won't scoff at a clean 300 with low miles!

The '98 sounds like a better buy. Do you happen to have any pictures of that one?

Pretty dang clean. I don’t have pics of the interior just a video. Tan leather. Couple rips in the back seats but interior is clean. Guy has receipts and documented history of all his services and part replacements since he’s owned it.

The’98 SC300 is a better option over the ‘95 400…. A clean interior helps a lot (especially the window frames if they are NOT cracked). Engine parts are more available for the 300s. Research on here about the ECU; requires attention.

Few pics of the interior of the 300 - most I can tell is cracking on the center console storage and a tear around the passenger side headrest in the backseat.

I’m driving down this weekend to check this thing out. It’s really a 2 owner vehicle (the guy got it from his elderly aunt not too long ago and she owned it for 13 years and only put 50k on it and had it serviced and inspected at Lexus of South Miami twice a year from the looks of the car fax report.

Hopefully I will be bringing it home!

There are many options to address the leather issues; depends on your budget. Any decent upholstery shop can tackle the center console and the rear seat (which I never use so I would not spend much) can be resolved with covers.

The door frames look great but inspect the sills for cracks under the leather lining. Test the seats to ensure the motors still work; there is a separate ECU just for the seats. Test the side view mirrors and seat memory buttons (there is a separate ECU for these, too, and a b*tch to replace).

Good luck on your trip….
