We noticed in our RZ that when fully charged it shows a range of about 196 miles. But, if I turn on the hvac fan the range drops by 40 miles. Turn it back off and it jumps back to 196. It doesn't matter if the AC is on, or what setting we use (low vs high).
Seems that the algorithm that Lexus developed for the range calculation penalizes fan use pretty heavily. Others are seeing what you are seeing. Here is one demonstration.
This has been pretty consistent with us. Charged to 100% last weekend and at the end of the charge cycle the range showed 227/284. There’s a range difference of 40+ miles all of the time.
Has anyone done any testing to see how accurate the GoM (Guess-O-Meter) is with the HVAC on? I am considering testing methods. My parents will be taking their RZ to Henderson, NV on a road trip for Thanksgiving and I will be monitoring it closely.
My theory (or hope!) is that the GoM over-penalizes HVAC use, so I aim to find out.
We will be testing it in our RZ as well (my parents got theirs first, in the summer). We have had our RZ just over a week now.
There is a software update coming soon that is supposed to address this, along with a few other various issues.
I'm trying to figure out if my RZ's software has this update but I don't think so. I charged to 80% and the app shows the following for the GoM:
Climate On: 171 mi est
Climate Off: 214 mi est
I know I can do way better with the HVAC on! Note, I'm almost a hyper-miler but my wife isn't, lol. This estimate is mostly based on my data, I suspect.
Until this update is actually released for the Rz, I can only go off of what was in the updates for the Soltera and the bZ4x. It appears that they fixed the overly conservative range estimates when using the HVAC. i believe it is also unlocking some additional mileage because of the huge buffer they included in the SOC from 0. It will also slightly improve the charging times at fast chargers. As well as an option to now see the SOC on the display. I am not aware yet if it fixes the horrible "guesstimates" it gives you based on your predictive driving habits, but if it fixes the 40mile drop when the HVAC is on, I’m guessing it does, since that is part of why the predictive range is so low.
Nothing official has been announced for USA yet, but UK owners are reporting that it is expected in Dec. This will require a trip to the dealer to have it installed.
