Looking for input for new SUV.
I am looking to replace my Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk for something a little nicer and quieter. We want to go on some longer road trips and use it as an everyday vehicle as well. I have a few priorities:
Thanks.
- Adaptive Cruise Control with Start/Stop
- Quiet Cabin
- Great audio system
- Reliable
Thanks.
I have a 500h. If I needed to purchase a new vehicle today I would go with a BMW X5 xDrive50e, Volvo XC60 T8 Recharge, or a Polestar 3.
The adaptive cruise in the Lexus works fine. No complaints there.
The cabin isn't as quiet as I would like. There are a ton of rattles too, which are quite bothersome, for me. I've had a lot of loaner vehicles and the rattles are pervasive throughout the RX lineup across all 5th gen model years.
The ML audio is disappointing. The HK (midrange) system in the Volvo beats it. The B&W system (high end) in the Volvo is on another level.
Reliability is yet unknown. I expect the engine to last a decade+ and go 200k+ miles. But I have already been left stranded by the defective 12V system that Lexus doesn't seem interested in addressing. So by how I define reliability, it isn't.

RX500h owner here with 5k miles on the clock. I'll generally agree with CommodoreAmiga - the cabin has a few rattles, which are currently being looked at by the dealer. The ML sound system is fine for me - I would say it sacrifices bass for overall clarity.
My biggest issue right now is the gas tank size & range - you'll see other threads on this forum/Reddit; seems to be pervasive across the RX and a couple of other models. Advertised capacity is 17gallons yet I've never put more than 13 in it, leading to a range of 350miles or less @ 23-24mpg. Some are saying this is a reserve to protect the hybrid system but if that's the case, it's incredibly misleading by Lexus, especially when the EPA listed range is 450miles. We'll see what the dealer says when they're done looking at it, but I live in the middle of nowhere and need that 450 mile range ideally, so the RX may not be staying with us if they can't find an answer - would move back to an X5 or try a GLE450

Strange, even after two years - I have zero rattles. Yes you are correct about the small gas tank.
But I would buy the RX again for it's reliability - and because an oil change at the dealer is $139. You aren't going to get that from the German makers.

bility. Wouldn't touch a X5 again dependability and maintenance cost second highest only ahead of Mercedes. Lexus lowest among luxury manufacturers.

Also zero rattles and zero issues a year in...
You might want to take a look at the hybrid version of the '25 Lincoln Nautilus: https://www.motortrend.com/news/linc...v-of-the-year/ Analogous to having a Toyota shop do many Lexus standard service items (after the "free" ones rolled into the base price), for a Lincoln a Ford dealer can do many of the standard service items.
(Just something to consider, since you had mentioned looking at a few other brands. I'm a 5x RX owner, but still periodically survey what else is out there.)

I have purchased three new Volvo XC60's over the recent years and two were so problematic that I sold them within 3 years and at around 30K miles each. One thing after another and very expensive to repair. I will NEVER buy another Volvo and I used to be quite an enthusiast. The Volvo's of old were known for their reliability, longevity and safety. Their reliability is in the toilet, based on my experience.
Volvo's lack of reliability is what drove me to Lexus. Around 15K's so far and while I am extremely disappointed in the ML sound system, I really like the car. No rattles, and while the engine is fairly loud on hard excelleration, I have gotten used to it and it is very quiet at cruising speeds. No regrets whatsoever.

I would have to agree with WellsB on this, and the reasons which he highlighted. Despite the 12v auxiliary battery nuisance issues and resulting workarounds, it is still an excellent automobile and I would still buy it again after 16 months of ownership. Great highway cruiser in HV mode and quiet around town in EV mode.
If you want one of those German SUV’s, lease it and return it after the lease is up. They are great vehicles to drive, and the performance & handling are excellent, but the cost of ownership after the warranty expires is insane and you will have issues. My brother is a German car person and complains about the $975 a piece tires and that's when they're on sale. I had a 2016 & 2020 RX350, and now a 2024 TX350. You're correct the 4cyl turbo is noisy, and the best hwy miles I got was 23mpg with premium gas which is required. The TX550h+ is a 6cyl hybrid which wasn't available when I got mine, and my be worth checking out. Overall, I got use to the engine noise and it's very comfortable with a smooth ride so I'm good with it and wanted something larger than the RX.
