Wonder why a manufacturer would use a refrigerant that shortens the life of the ac system?

Hmm... I imagined detection was performed through electrical resistance, but agree that it could be through other means.
Here’s a quote from somewhere on the Internet
”A steering touch sensor has also been integrated to accurately detect the driver’s grip while Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) is operating.”
The thing is.. both ES and LS do have that soft wrapper around the steering wheel, leaving pretty much nothing out of wooden parts. And it’s the new grip detection tech I want on my RX. But from what I see on the images in pamphlet is that this “wrapper” is not present.
If grip detection is performed by using touch/pressure sensing... and now to think of it , it probably is.. we could actually be completely out of luck at least here in Japan.
I’ll still wait for dealer’s response, but probably won’t be holding my breath as much.. oh well we’ll see

The current systems don't use a conductive sensor to detect your hand being on the wheel. It uses a sensor that can detect the very slightest amount of torque you're putting on the wheel when you touch it. This "soft wrapper" you speak of, are you talking about having leather over the whole wheel? This allows them to have the whole steering wheel heated. You still can have wood inserts in the inner part of the wheel.
But I agree, it’s not conductive it seems.

That soft leather also works as a touch sensor for hand detection. I can tell it works completely different from what we currently have on RX because I did a two days test drive off ES with the new system. Also asked Lexus tech folks at the dealership and they said the same.
But I agree, it’s not conductive it seems.

How about an A/C compressor “on/off” switch, easily accessible right on the dash, like almost all
other cars? It’s the only thing I actually “hate” about this vehicle....having to navigate they menus to turn off the compressor, which I do often, in the ever changing weather of Pittsburgh.

You set the temperature you want, and it decides if it needs to cool or heat to reach the set temperature. Hence it manages the air conditioning also. I think this is why the button is not made available on the dash board.
But many people (like my wife) like to manage the climate themselves, find the control on the screen being a hassle.

I'm excited that Lexus is offering Nuluxe for the F-Sport models, but why oh why change the Rioja Red to Circuit Red?! For an SUV? Are you kidding me? The rioja red is such a nice classy red whereas that bright circuit red is just tacky. Bummer.
