So I have to decide if a certified RX w/NAV is worth $45,885, which includes a $2,500 stupid tax. (40.5 - 38.0)

Opinions?
Our situation is the opposite. My wife doesn't want to give up her 13-year-old ES and get into an RX. She likes the RX a lot too but would rather take the money and spend it on vacations and family memories. $5K to change cars is a steep proposition. Do you guys have another car to use? Why must it be a new-ish AWD RX? What if you keep the ESh and bought an old AWD RX for use in bad weather? What if you switch to an RX and the wife has buyer's remorse about that too? Can you just rent an SUV/trailer when you need more space? Besides the $5K hit, you're also giving up 40K in miles and wear-and-tear. I wouldn't do it. At the same time, we understand your situation and some would say $5K is a small sum, spread over time, to keep the wife happy and maintain your sanity. Me, personally, I'd rather keep the ESh and let the experience build some character. The ESh is a fine car. You can buy a whole lot of other nice toys or travel with $5K. Use some of that money to take the wife to the spa or an all-inclusive resort. If parking an RX in the garage is more important then carry on. Five thousand is a lot to lose though.

It’s not really losing 5 because a Certified RX would have been more than the new ES to start with. I’m buying a more expensive car.

We are dumping an ancient Odyssey and hanging on to a slightly less ancient Prius. We are new empty nesters and have no interest in a mom-mobile. Wife almost always thinks Done Is Good and would keep the ES, I’m the one tempted to switch.
