My crazy rotor replacement saga
I picked up a used 2016 RX 350 with 12k miles on it 6 months ago. About 3 months ago I started experiencing a strong vibration while braking at higher speeds (above 50mph). At my next service I asked them to look into it. As suspected, all 4 rotors are warped, dealer cost to resurface all rotors and new pads... $1400.00! I know this is a heavy vehicle, I drive hard most of the time and I drive a lot. I now have 35,000 miles on the car. I do not like the idea of reserfacing warped rotors as you end up with a thinner rotor which is more likely to warp again.
So, I purchased a set of crossdrilled/slotted rotors on Amazon. Wrong fitment, for Gen 3 (pre 2015) model. I then decided to get a set of EBC Sport Rotor (GD7498). Wrong fitment also. I contacted EBC, after an hour conversation and a few emails back and forth, they confirmed their fitment catalog was wrong. They had "2010 - current" for all RX models. I then tried O'Riley's, a local shop and NAPA. All the same wrong fitment. On a whim, I went to Autozone.com and found they listed the specs for their rotors, BINGO! The one listed for my RX would fit. I ordered the GOLD series as I live in Oregon and wanted the added corrosion protection. They arrived in 3 days, thew them on a few days later with Akebono ProAct Ceramic (the only pads I use on my vehicles).
Very happy so far, been a few days. I have two weeks of high mileage trips ahead and will update this as needed.
Akebono ProAct 1324 pads
All apart
New rotors & pads
All done!

It really is mspearl95, the salted roads up here during the winter really take their toll. I greased them up a bit more before I put the tires back on.

I lived in SW Washington prior to moving to OR last year, the Beaverton Area. But I drive throughout the NW. Most freeways get salt especially in the passes, Mt. Hood, Ashland, Steven's pass.

turning 2 sets ol rotors and replacing 2 sets of pads, 1400?? pfft
labor 1h per axle, pushing 1.5hr, so 3 hr labor, ?? so pads are 400 per set ??
sounds funny for sure
nice job handling it, the results should be better also.

Agreed. It takes me about 2 hours to replace all rotors and pads, so the $1400 is for what?

How did you manage to compress the rear piston?

pqn628 - I haven't tackled the rears yet, waiting for it to cool down a bit. But I have a universal tool which fits in and with the help of a wrench you can "turn" them in. I've used it on Honda and VW rear brakes in the past.
Major items on quote are $430.00 for Front Brake job, $340.00 for Rear Brake job and $400.00 to turn all rotors. (my local auto shop does them for $25/each not $100/each WTF?!) Besides, turning them would only resolve the symptom not the actual problem of poorly spec'd rotors for such a heavy vehicle.
and yes, I knocked out the fronts in a little over an hour because I had to do it in my drive as my garage was not an option this time.

seeing rotors at 100$ per and pads at 115$ (143) for front, rear a tic less total, on mylparts.com (607$ total, not retail)
so 250-300 in labor per axle ?? for super loose numbers ?? hmm 2 hrs at $140 is 280 might not be so far off ??
do the rears need a scanner to retract ?? lots of vehicles were going that way over the past years, just thinking out loud, i know the caliper tools to spin them in.
