This makes sense. My 2010 RX is not that much roomier than my 2017 RX

the 2010 is roomier in height - I can’t fit my 30” suitcases standing in the side on a the 2017 like I could on the he 2010. Otherwise, I think the 2010 trunk was slightly deeper, but the 2017 looks to be slightly wider.

This is my 3RX all-season cargo mat on top of my 4RX mat in my 4RX. Almost no difference, but it appears the 4RX trunk is almost an inch longer.

Wow it fits on the sides too. I would have thought the shape would change, but it does look like the 3RX mat is too long for the 4RX.

My 3RX has a nice trunk characteristic: It seems like I can always close the lift gate doesn't matter how bulky my coolers + other stuffs are. I was thinking "no, it won't fit, no way", and the lift gate can close nicely. Maybe that will not be the case for the 4RX

Clarification: The 3RX mat is on top of the 4RX mat. Therefore the 4RX mat is too long for the 3RX.

This will clear up any confusion.
based on this thread, the overall space should be very comparble 2 generations , minus the area under the 4th generation slopped roof.

Actually that slopped roof cut lots of space. My smaller SUV can load more suitcases than my RX.

It is a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander. If you have tall suitcase or box near the the end of the RX, the slopped rear window simply prevents the door from closing. I get it those tall stuff may block the rear view, but sometimes we just do what we have to do. Plus, I may arrange the tall suitcases to the side of the cargo, so I can still have some rear view. But with RX, this is not even an option.

Was this with or without the rear seats moved up. As you know, the RX has tons of rear legroom which feels much more than the competition without sliding rear seats. Sliding the seats forward actually gives quite a bit of additional cargo room.

Couple months back, had to drive family to the airport using my father’s RX. Four passengers meant that all the luggage needed to be in the cargo area. We loaded it all in (with back seats adjusted to rearmost position) and was worried we would need to drive a second car since the hatch couldn’t close. Then I went around and moved the seats up, pushed the luggage in, and all of the luggage fit with some room to spare.

That is a good point. Once I had to slide my RX rear seats and front passenger seat forward in a road trip with relatives to have more cargo room. After we came back, when I took them out with my Outlander for a dinner, one of them actually commented the Outlander was roomier (for him) than RX.

The rear seats in Outlander is slideable too.

A year or so ago, when I had a 2013 rx450h I took a tape measure and measured the distance on the cargo floor to the rear opening. The Gen 4 loaner that I had was actually either 2 or 4 inches longer. I do not remember which anymore. Before measuring I made sure that the rear seats were back and upright.

Sometimes I carry 20" bicycle for my kid and in G3 it would lean on back seats in order to fit. in G4 it is laying flat with some room to spare. So the floor is definitely longer,
