Default how many miles can you go after fuel warning lite

Like the title says, how many miles (or gal. fuel left) can you go after fuel warning light comes on? Today my fuel warning light came on and I had 17 miles range. I had to drive 8 miles to get fuel so I was down to 9 miles range and it took 15.9 gallons of fuel to fill up. I always stop filling at the first shut off. The capacity of the the tank is 19.1 gal. Does this mean I still had about 3 gal of fuel after my range hit 0? Maybe Lexus leaves this as a buffer so you don;t run out Just curious to know if i could have gone another 30-40 miles. I don't think I want to test it and I normally fill before it gets to 1/4 tank left Anybody else notice this?

I would say you calculations are correct. I know on my LX you would have 4 gallons when the light goes on.

The 2016 450RXh has a 17.2 Gal tank capacity. I have never been able to fill more than 15.8 Gal, and I think the range showed 0 or close to it. So that meant about 1.4 Gal remaining. Most of the time i fill up when it shows less than 30 for range, and fill up using 14.5-15.2 gal. THe amount does depend on the angle of the car, the temperature and so on.

I would think that anything more than 30 miles (RX350) and you are taking a chance. Just not worth it, but if you're stuck, that should be safe.

Good thread. I was always curious about that. Lexus seems super conservative about this. I am always a bit disappointed when i fill it, its usually 13 or 14 gallons. I started to wonder if it had 4 gallons left with the light on

You've already tested it. First, ignore the range as it's very approximate. Your tank was down to about 3.2 gallons when the light went on (19.1 minus 15.9). 3.2 times MPG gives you an estimate of how many miles you could drive before empty. For example, 3.2 x 21 = 67 miles left after the light. Don't let your tank get below 1/4 tank and you don't have to worry about this situation.

Toyota and Lexus trucks and SUVs take into account that if you were driving with a full 5 passengers, cargo and/or a maxed out trailer. Your fuel mileage would substantially decrease. So if they left 1 gallon before the low fuel light went on, you went then have a very, very short range before you ran out of fuel.

Fuel pump is liquid cooled. You don't want to run the tank too low

450h here. Just filled up this weekend at 1mi of range left. I was able to put in 14.695 gallons (no topping off). So almost exactly 2.5 gallons left in the tank (2.505 gal left of 17.2 gal tank). P.S. I was able to travel 435mi using 14.695 gallons.
