At a regular, non Costco gas station in the same part of town 91 octane is $3.20/gallon. Go to the more ritzy areas of LA and I've seen 91 octane at $3.50/gallon.

Just because the engine can cope with 87 it doesn't mean that's recommended. This is from my Owner's Manual page 739....
Except EU area:
You must only use unleaded gasoline.
Select unleaded gasoline with a Research Octane Number of 95 or higher for optimum engine performance.

Of course one can put in whatever fuel one wants.
RON95 for RX450? RON91 for RX350.

Because I didn't add the word 'minimum' recommended? My father-in-law owns 3 auto-shops in NYC - he is an engine whisperer and if he says 87 is fine, I'll believe him. You can put racing rated octane if you'd like and it won't change anything - the RX350 engine is designed for RON91 (87oct) for optimal performance. No knocks - happy life.

A few personal remarks have been removed. If we cannot keep it on topic and respect each other's opinion, then this thread will be closed.

This is all so confusing, I read the table where it says what you said, but it doesn't say so in my manual. This other table says.....
USA (AKI(anti-knock index)/PON(pump octane number)
87 = 91
89 = 93
91 = 95
93 = 98
Which backs-up what's in my manual, oh heck let's all **** in the tank and see what happens

While I think the "Top Tier" moniker is all marketing, Sunoco is on the official list: http://www.toptiergas.com/licensedbrands/

I wonder what the payment is to have your gas company on that list?

Yeah, BP paid up a little over a year ago, too.

This topic of thids discussion should have been more specific. The RX350 runs on Regular (87 Octane) gas, while the RX450h says Premium 91+ Octane required as per manual and fuel door flap.

RON we know, for RX350 it is 91, as MINIMUM required per manual. MON we really don't know as it varies and because of ethanol (and other form of alcohol) additives used at least in the northern cold area, its about 83-84.

( 91 + 84 ) / 2 = about 87 AKI

RX is my 1st ever vehicle to run on regular gas, it costs me $35 for the entire tank which was mind-boggling the 1st time I filled up. I thought it was an error. I'll try to fill up 93 octane just for hell of it, but I'd expect the RX to perform the same under normal driving conditions. I guess if you like to push you car into the redline on the daily basis, put premium 93 just to reduce stress on your management systems, the real power loss with 87 is at very high rpms when the engine management system is working overtime, adjusting to avoid engine knock.

I do think gas companies are there just to sell you bogus claims for profits, example, the mid-grade 89, ever used it?

A better question is after they qualify for this Top-Tier title (and pay up) - do they still uphold the qualify of the product after the recognition?

I think some department, I think the DOT, has people who check the pumps and even takes samples. I know they check to make sure that a gallon indicated is a gallon delivered. Quality, not so sure.
