255 width tires on stock 20x8 wheels?
Can you safely run 255mm width tires (255/50/20) on the OEM 20x8 wheel? I want wider tires when it's time to replace the stock tires (235/55/20) but I would want to keep using the stock 20x8 Fsport wheels.
Anyone here using 255mm or wider tires on stock 20x8 wheels? Any issues or problems?

I went to "wheel-size.com" and the recommended rim size for 255/50R20 is 8.5x20. I also checked "tyresizecalculator.com" and the largest size for 8" rims is min 215 to max 245. I'm thinking to be safe you should find a wider aftermarket rim. Best to check with a professional tire shop just to be sure.

Thank you for the response. Yes, I have seen those websites too and they all say that max width for 8 inch wide wheel is 245mm. However, I also checked the product page for Michelin Premier LTX and it says the 255/50/20 version of this tire can fit wheels 7"-9" in width. It even says that the measuring rim width for this tire is 8". See below.
This is why I want to know if there is anyone currently using 255 or wider tires on stock rims with their RX. Just want to make sure that there will be no issues.

The Michelin Premier LTX, guessing that's the tire you checked out, in a 255/50/20 is also rated as an XL and 109V. The XL will have a stiffer sidewall and let you inflate the tires more than a regular tire. The extra inflation should get rid of any squirming the bigger tire might have. In the Michelin web site the specs they give you are measured on an 8" rim...so that's good as well.
If I was going to put bigger tires and stay with the 20" that's the tire I would pick.

If you replaced the stock 20" tires with the Michelin LTX 255/50/20 XL 109V, I would bet that the ride would be slightly more stiff. The lower sidewall and the XL tire (maybe running 36 psi) will stiffen up the ride qualities. Usually any shorter sidewall results in a more firm ride.
That said, this is exactly what I am looking for and these tires will be going on this coming summer. Unless I can find a summer only tire designed for an SUV in this size.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't the 235/55 and 255/50 have the same sidewall height? The /55 and /50 are supposed to be the ratio of the sidewall against the width (235 vs 255), otherwise the circumference of the tire will be different. Don't think it will make a difference in terms of ride stiffness.
With a bigger contact point against the pavement, all you'll likely see is lower gas mileage as there's more resistance. Definitely nicer looks though, as I feel our 235s are a little stringy.

Kolokmee, yup you are correct the sidewall difference is only 1mm smaller. I don't think anyone would feel that!

I use this website for wheel/tire calculations. I would think if you want a softer ride you would have to go to a 60 series tire, such as 235-60-20
This size gives you 12mm more sidewall and should in theory make the ride softer. Depends on the tires as well as to how they are designed.

Yep. I used to have the 18s but couldn't stand the way they looked. Also, the original Bridgestones had this weird hum on launch. I found F-Sport wheels and got Michelins off of Tirerack. I ordered the factory recommended size but now am wondering if i should have gone with a bigger sidewall for more cushion.
