Default 4th Gen RX Problems Guide

Now that the 4RX has been out over a year, I thought it's about time to put together a list of common issues we have been experiencing to help others find a solution, bring awareness to potential buyers, or bring awareness to Lexus. Here is what I have observed ordered by number of replies in descending order. I will try to keep this first post up-to-date.

Mods - please consider making this a sticky.

Go figure, my 2015 GS350 has no issues and the resale sucks. The 4th gen RX has all these challenges and the resale is great.

Well the RX is much more popular than the GS, so there is a higher demand in the resale market; has nothing to do with number of problems.

Glad to hear. A lot of folks seem to come here and want to know what they should expect in terms of issues. It's also a good way to keep Lexus informed/accountable for the problems they caused.

I must have lucked out as in 850 miles my 450h has not had any of these problems. There is some brake noise as I come to a stop but it is the regenerative system working.

My only worries are the wear on the starter having to start the engine many times a day.

On the bright side would the 450h wear less on the brakes because much of the power goes back in the battery while braking.

What do you mean by #10 - "Hand warmers barely warm"? My heated steering wheel barely gets warm - does that mean I have a problem with it?

Hate to tell you but my droning don't start until after a thousand miles or so. It'll be hard to know for sure on a test drive. The hesitation is a bigger issue for me so I've learned to live with the weird low rpm drone/whine noise.

Exhausts notes generally do change after a 1000 miles or so. Doesn't surprise me at all that it started after a while. I haven't really been experiencing to much of the drone recently. Probably because I drive in manual most of the time. The other day it was in Auto, AC on and had four people in the car, Out of the blue that stupid drone noise appeared, how embarrassing trying to explain to my brother why this 50k+ car does this. Better yet explaining why Lexus says its a normal characteristic. I guess he wont buy a Lexus anytime soon.

First post has been updated. Did I miss anything?

Looks like out of the three top issues, Lexus has only addressed two of them. And even so, one of them is only partially fixed.

Hi Anita, I still wasn't able to find this in the FAQ and we still have new members asking about problems with the RX:

Interesting. The heated steering wheel on my NX is great, so Lexus knows how to do it right. Why not for the RX?

Compared to my other vehicles that have had heated steering wheels, the RX heated steering wheel is a HUGE disappointment.

I think it should be pointed out that, for some of the issues listed, the number of posts about those issues can be somewhat misleading. For at least a couple of the problem threads, the same 4 or 5 people have posted repeatedly, and they have said essentially the same things over and over again. I suspect that, if you examined those threads carefully, you would find that the number of different people who have posted and the number of posts that have added new information would be only a relatively small fraction of the total number of posts in those threads.
