Car Magazine recently rounded up the Lexus RX450h, the Volvo XC90, and the Audi Q7 for a luxury SUV battle.

These were exactly the ones on my short list. We almost bought a Volvo last year, but they wanted MSRP to order one and had to wait 3-6 months. After hearing about all the problems Volvo owners are having, I'm so glad we didn't wind up with one. On the outside, the styling of the other two are downright boring. The RX is love it or hate it and I love it! On the interior, the RX is probably the overall laggard, but not by much. Q7 was probably the finest, but the run flat tires are an albatross. Will read the article and see what the reviewers had to say.

Pole Position
No regrets on my RX purchase.

Some friends convince me to look at the Volvo. Paying over MSRP/waitlist and those crazy complex engine configuration (I4, Turbo, SC, & optional hybrid) was just too much for me to even consider.

Lexus Champion
When we searched for a new 3 row vehicle to replace our 3RX, we looked at the XC90s. I thought they were beautiful, but just couldn't do the 4 cylinder engine. If it had a V6, it would have been a contender.

We cross shopped all 3.
The Volvo dealership did not feel like a luxury car dealership. My Toyota dealership felt more upscale - no fancy amenities. The interior of the Volvo seemed to have a little more plastic than I cared for. The small engine was also a deal breaker.
Audi was a very strong contender. Again, the dealership experience was nothing to write home about. They were not offering free oil changes. The salesman claimed that the new 2017 Q7 were in short supply and I could be waiting for a while if I was not prepared to take the only one they had on the lot. Dont know if this was true or just a way to push me to close the deal.
Lexus was just the perfect bed for Goldilocks. Already low interest rates which were further reduced by 1.5 points for Toyota loyalty. The 3.5 V6 engine was a decent size - strong biase towards naturally aspirated vs turbos. However, the customer service and reliability of the Lexus won the day. My lavish local Lexus delearship exudes luxury in every way. There is a spa at the delearship for my wife to get a manicure/pedicure while waiting for her car. There is a lounge with a cafiteria where we can enjoy free meals while waiting for our car. The staff are super nice and go out of their way to make you feel like Royalty. They even have designated Lexus parking stalls at our local airport where I can park.

The long term bugged me on the Volvo. Hot designs with beautiful materials, but longevity with so much electronics is unproven in the volvo. Odd as it is the XC is just too wide for us. We park in tight garages and the extra width would make some spots unparkable. Beautiful understated looks though!
