Default Extended Warranty (merged threads)

Hey there, I just joined this forum after buying my wife the new 2016 RX 350. Excited to be a part of the community.

I wanted to ask a question to the members here.

We were obviously given the option to purchase an extended warranty at the time of purchase. I was hoping to ask if anyone had experience with extended warranties and if it was worth it. Any insight or advice would be much appreciated.

- Dave

How much are they wanting for an extended warranty? For how many years bumper to bumper? Also, does anyone know if these are negotiable as well???

It was something like $2,300 for 8 year / 72,000 miles [really 4 years and 24,000 miles in addition to the standard warranty].

When I bought my 2015 GS350 they also wanted me to buy there warranty. The one they offer was called platinum with 8years/ 125,000miles for $4,800. I negotiated that down to a maximum discount of $1900. I told them I passed and decided not to buy it because i have owned many Lexus models in the past without buying extended warranty and they were all trouble free way past 125,000miles. Heck I drove my 2006 LS430 to 240,000 with zero repairs besides regular wear items and tune ups. Never had a Lexus break down on my watch.

Now I also negotiated for prepaid maintenence plan for 7 years/ 90,000k miles for $1450. Lexus wanted $3600 for that.

Lexus makes a lot of money selling extended warranties and maintenance plans. I am not sure, but i think Lexus offers first two maintenance's for free. It will only include an oil change and fluid replenishment. Brake pads and that sort of things will be only required in 30K miles or longer, depending on how you drive. Rear brake pads last much longer then the front.
I am pretty sure that you can purchase maintenance plan and an extended warranty within the 4 year 50K mile range. you don't need to purchase any of them wright away.

I don't recommend purchasing it thru the dealer. I was quoted by Schools First Credit Union that 84mo. 74k mile Gold extended warranty for the 2016 RX will come out to be $685 with a $100 deductible. Not sure what other lenders offer, but that is what I was quoted. There are various options depending on mileage and number of years. I was given a list with a rather large range.

Last time I purchased a Third Party extended warrent claim I was burned real bad. I owned a BMW 550i and decided to buy a Bumper to Bumper warrenty from a Third Party but highly recromended by the BMW dealer who also tried to sell me a Factory BMW warrenty too. So when I told BMW NO they recromend me buy their Third Party warrenty. Fast forward 5 years and my BMW need repairs that should be covered by warranty. Dealer told me that the Third Party warranty went out of business so I was so out of luck. The reason I bought Third party was the price is so attractive. I will never see that money again.

Third Party warranty, Its cheaper for a reason.

Thanks everyone for all the info. Very thankful. Will need to do a little research. If I find any other help, I'll report back here.

We just traded in our 2008 RX400H for a 2016 RX350. In the 8 years and 2 months, and 53000 miles, we owned the RX400H I did the following repairs (excluding oil changes and tire rotation every 6 months).
2 sets of tires
1 new battery
several inexpensive light bulbs
water pump and timing belt (complained to Lexus and they paid most of the cost)
multiple wheel alignments until I realized the tires need to be cross-rotated to eliminate radial pull
plus inverter recall and headlight recall
Only the water pump and timing belt would have been covered by the warranty.
Lexus is the most reliable car. In my mind it is better to bank the money towards maintenance than spend the money on the extended warranty.
Even making the mistake in the 70s in buying 2 VWs, I am still ahead in the cost of non scheduled repairs vs. the costs for multiple extended warranties.

Wow, I hope my tires last longer than that. Did you have alignment troubles, or did they just wear that fast?
