That said, today, dealers realize that many buyers focus primarily on the discount from MSRP, and they often are willing to make little or no profit from the selling price of the car. Instead, they make their profit from a variety of items other than the selling price of the car itself, including undervaluing a trade in, finance and lease terms, selling the customer a high mark up extended warranty, selling the customer other high mark-up add-ons, such as interior or exterior protection plans, tire and wheel protection plans, pre-paid service plans, ding and dent plans, nitrogen tire fills, etc. Those items typically have mark-ups of several hundred percent over what their cost is to the dealer, and, if the dealer can convince the customer to buy a few of those items, it can give a large discount from MSRP and still make a bigger profit than it would from a customer who bought none of those items and who bought the car for a much smaller discount from MSRP.

In the case of the $1200 for dealer preparation, paint protection, nitrogen tire fill, etc., those are items that cost the dealer virtually nothing and that are essentially pure profit for the dealership. Also, the $750 fee for processing the title and registration strikes me as being a bit high.

Again, it looks like you still did very well, but the dealer is "taking back" some of the nice discount from MSRP with those add-on items.
I did want to add that I did purchase a prepaid service option for 2 years a beyond the 1st year. At the end of the day, there are many fees and additional items that cost nothing to the dealer. They can slice it any way they want to make their numbers be acceptable, but the maintenance and service aspect was key for me. This was part of the deal in my original post.

I guess nitrogen is the latest dealer scam. Unreal. My dealer tried to add on a $499 paint protection called cilajet. They said they don't sell any cars without it. I told them you do now.

While the opportunity to get the $1000 US Open certificate expired when the tournament ended, those who did get the certificate can still use it until 12/31/17.

Default Buying 2017 RX 350 through Costco Auto program

With Costco Auto program, it basically list all the option selected, invoice price and MSRP and send the "built" to the participating dealership. So for example, The build comes out with these numbers:

Invoice: 48,200
MSRP: 52,570

Is 48,200 is the lowest? If you do the math, that's about 8.3% difference. I heard people gets up to 15% off MSRP... Is Costco is not the best option to go?

Default Looking to buy first Lexus, need some advice

Hi All!

I am looking to buy my first Lexus, and I am set on the RX350.

The local dealer where I live is notoriously hard to deal with, so I don't think I'm going to get very far with them. However, I am expanding out into the Nashville, Birmingham, and Atlanta markets. I'm in North AL, so I'm willing to travel within a reasonable drive for the right deal.

So far, I have only inquired thru USAA to a Nashville dealer, and here is what he sent me...the inquiry was a generic one from USAA so I'm wondering how much more I can get by putting feelers out with other dealers and playing them against one another.

2017 RX350 Base (has hands free liftgate option)

MSRP: $44,614
Quote: $40,110 + tax title tag $399 dealer fee

I'm sending him a response for a final "out the door" price with all fees included.

On a base RX, do you think I could get a better deal? Any Southern dealers that might be more aggressive? I'm looking to get the BEST deal possible as this is already exceeding what I really wanted to spend on my next car, but I really like it.

I just put a deposit on an RX350 Satin Cashmere with Noble brown interior with premium package + navigation, 20" wheels, blind spot monitor, intuitive parking assist, rear cross traffic alert, automatic breaking, heated/ventilated seats, moonroof, navigation system, towing prep package.
MSRP $52, 924
discount $8000
taxable fees $98
non taxable fees $46
Dealer fees $599
tax $2,877.26
OTD $48,544.26
15.1% off MSRP

I was working with Justin Balcer of Nalley Lexus. No haggling, he was upfront with the discount.
contact email jbalcer@nalleycars.com

he doesnt have the car right now but he is expecting it in the next 5 days. Deposit was $500.
We got the color we wanted.
Will keep you posted once i pick up the car.
