No need to pay for premium prices. Any oil from Walmart that fits your wallet is suffice.

Especially, when you are changing it at 5K miles.

Except he changes his oil every 2,250 miles. He is going to change his oil 44 times over 100,000 miles. His Royal Purple filter is $17 on amazon and the Valvoline oil is $30 for 6 quarts at Walmart so he will spend over $2200 over 100,000 miles just on oil changes assuming his time is worth nothing.

It's not as Black and White as you propose, nor as foolish.

I'll go with the Top Engine - Engineer at Nissan's GT-R program.

He states every 2,000 miles.

i would say it’s worse for the engine with less flow. Especially hybrids where you want max flow with star - stop operations.
Flow remains well within specs using RP Filter.

You would somewhat reduce flow to increase filtration.

Afterall, is that what a filter is supposed to do?

A very interesting discussion but it would be difficult to prove one scenario over another. You will never hear a claim of a 20 micron filter made my car last 50,000 miles longer. Way too many variables. I change my oil once a year using the OEM filter. I put on about 4000 miles a year. I will not live long enough to know if I have done the right thing.

Royal purple filter also made in Mexico and also looks to have quality control issues. The toyota filter i received looks perfect.

Know it very well. It just doesn't filter as well.

The RP out performs Toyota OEM and that is by design on both parts.

If you change your oil every 10K, you are very wise to stick with Toyota, that's who its designed for.

The guy who runs 10K changes.

My RP's are Made in the USA.

Not lopsided, just not pushed down.

That box had been crushed.

Toyota is the best filter if you run 7.5K+ oil changes.

It has to be designed for those customers.

As a major auto mfg'r, you have so many customer profiles to cover.

The Leased owner is a huge concern for them.

They want minimal maintenance costs.

If you own your vehicle then the RP filters are more suited to you.

Unless you plan to go 7.5K+ changes.

It is a matter of physics more than marketing.

that’s just one out of 3 things. The other being bypass valve calibration if it’s a non cartridge type.

This is just mostly marketing gimmick on low micron filtration. It doesn’t cost more to do, Toyota can easily do that but choose not to because it’s not the right balance between flow and filtration.

Filtration is superior with the RP and the Purolator Boss filter. That's proven.

I'm sure the RP & Boss filter media costs more than the paper element in the Toyota.

Toyota cannot do that because they have to cover for the negligent buyers going 10K - 20K+ between changes.

With the sub 25 micron filters they are trapping more contaminants than a Toyota filter.

It's more of physics than marketing.

But Toyota tells you that 10K is ok, that's the marketing hype by Toyota,

Toyota filters existed before 10k intervals. They have not changed for 10k intervals. Correlation is not causation in this case.

If you really want to quote TCCN, he also religiously use Toyota parts and Toyota filters and never once use anything aftermarket.
