Extended warranties are among the greatest opportunities that car dealers have to pad their profits. The mark-ups on extended warranties can be several hundred per cent.

For several years, I brokered car sales, and I had the opportunity to sell extended warranties. When I saw how outrageous the mark-up was on them, I could not, in good conscience, recommend that my customers buy them. If a customer insisted on buying an extended warranty, I would sell it to him/her at a fraction of the advertised price, and I still made a nice profit on the deal.

Consider that the Lexus bumper-to-bumper warranty covers the car for 4 years or 50,000 miles. Beyond that, the power train warranty extends to 6 years or 70,000 miles. And the hybrid components on your RX are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Thus, the bulk of the time that is "covered" by the extended warranty is already covered by the factory warranty

If you keep your car for 6 years or more, yes, you are likely to incur some maintenance/repair costs, but the vast majority of those costs will come from things like tires, brakes, batteries, etc., which wouldn't be covered by the extended warranty. Lexus builds very dependable vehicles. Yes, there is a chance that your car could need a repair that would be covered by the extended warranty and whose cost would be greater than the cost of the extended warranty, but the chances of that happening are small. If, instead of buying extended warranties, you put the money that you would have spent on the extended warranties into an "emergency car repair" savings account, over the course of your next several cars, you would be virtually guaranteed to be many thousands of dollars ahead of where you would have been had you bought extended warranties for those cars.

We bought a 2016 RX 350 with 10,000 miles on it, so it's still under the bumper to bumper warranty for the next 4 years. The dealership (in Colorado) offered us an extended bumper to bumper warranty for an additional 5 years for $3,990. That seems to be a lot more than many of the prices I see on this thread, so is it because it's an extended warranty for a certified pre-owned car, and not a new car?

The dealership also said that I had to buy the warranty at the time of the car purchase or I would never be able to qualify for the bumper to bumper extended warranty again. I can still cancel the extended warranty and get my money back. Any ideas on why what I was offered was so much more expensive and why the dealership said I could only buy it at the time of the car purchase? Thanks!
