Oil change error

Just changed the oil in my 2012 RX350. I made a mistake and others my learn from this error. Specs call for 6.5 liters with a filter change. I was in a hurry and put 6.5 liters of oil in the engine before checking the dipstick. The oil was level was well above the full mark on the dipstick. I ended up draining approximately 0.5 liter of oil from the engine in order to get the oil level to the top mark. I assume that when I drained the oil with the car parked on level ground, 0.5 liters of old oil remained in the oil pan. To test this assumption I will raise the front end of the car next time I change the oil. Further, I will run the engine and check the oil level at the 6 liters before adding more oil.

I have a 2015 RX350 AWD. The oil spec with a filter is 6.4 quarts or 6.1 liters.

No, oil does not stay in oil pan. If you put in 6.5 L, and had 500ml leftover, it's simply oil not quite filling filter right away. Your capacity is 6.1 L plus 0.4L for filter.

I always try to underfill it by about a pint then check and add more after running the car a bit. Easier to add than drain!

gotta keep on mind that you dont drain all of the oil each time. I add only five qts and 12 oz to hit middle of the dipstick. thats draining the oil for 15 mins

Did you run the engine for few mins. B4 checking? Filter has to soak up some oil needing oil circulation.

Likely operator (me) error

This was likely operator (me) error. I will verify on my next oil change. It is interesting to note that there have been several posts by owners with high oil levels after an oil change. I appreciate the feedback and value this forum.

I fill the oil filter with oil prior to installation. That lets the engine oil get up to pressure faster. The paper soaks it up so it may take a couple of pours. Don't fill it so much it spills out during installation.

On any vehicle you generally want to allow enough time (I usually aim for 15 minutes or more) for as much oil to drain as possible and, even so, you may not get anywhere near 100% of the old oil out. As stated above, you also want to underfill, fill the new filter, allow time for the new oil to settle and check the level before topping off.
