New Owner / DIY'er Question
 
Hello everyone, new the the site and forum and am curious on your thoughts regarding maintenance. We recently purchased a 2013 RX 350 from a non-Lexus dealer. I have reviewed the service history (Lexus website and carfax) on my car and I do not see anything done recently to my wife's RX. My question is should I go ahead and replace the oil, spark plugs, all filters, and brakes and rotors so that I know that it has been done?

That is no telling without mileage known for the vehicle.

The spark plugs do not need to be done until 100,000 miles and considering the high cost, (6 hours labor) I would wait until then as the intake manifold has to be removed to get to the rear bank shocks.

I would with your mileage change the oil, engine air and cabin air filters, transmission fluid, brake fluid and if all wheel drive, the transfer case and differential fluids. The brake pads and rotors do not need replacement until they are worn to about 3 or 4 millimeters. Same as any other vehicle. Get them inspected.
The transmission fluid is best done by a Toyota or Lexus dealer (or independent Toyota specialist) as it has a complicated fluid level check that is temperature dependent and needs the right fluid. Also insist on Toyota Long Life Red Coolant as it is supposed to last 10 years.

I just took my mothers 2010 Lexus ES350 to a local Toyota dealer for a transmission flush, coolant flush and brake fluid flush. Total bill for all 3 was $573.00. It has the same basic engine and transmission as the RX. It was a lot cheaper than the local Lexus dealer.
I had just installed new brake pads myself which saved her some money.

If your pads have lots of life you may want to just get the brakes serviced. This involves taking the caliper off, cleaning and lubricating the guide pins and brake pad slide areas.

With 70k oil change (obviously), all air filters, all fluids, and brake pads. I would hold off on the spark plug replacement and rotors, especially the rear rotors unless you drive with your parking brakes on.

"Recently" is a subjective thing. In terms of miles and time, how long has it been since it was last in for service/maintenance work?

Your call to make. Not knowing if maintenance was done would have been a potential red flag for me before purchase so my priorities may not align with yours. If I did somehow end up in such a situation I would certainly do any scheduled maintenance that I could not verify was done.

As others have already pointed out, plugs aren't due yet at you mileage. Look at your maintenance schedule. Things like pads & rotors can be measured/inspected to determine if they need to be replaced and/or serviced.

If you're not sure of these things then DIY'ing may not be the best option.
