Default Acoustic Glass?

Hi Guys

Thinking of upgrading our 2001 RX300 to a Gen 3, Likes the looks, etc. I read about acoustic glass and wondered when it was implemented and does it really make a difference? I'm always looking for a quieter ride!

Also, is premium required on some Gen 3's?

thx

I have a '12 and I've notice that the front doors windows have double pane glass. I think that it helps with outside noise somewhat, but not with the engine's operating grunt.
It calls for 87 octane, but I'm testing 93 octane with amsoil fuel injector cleaner to clean up some carbon and see if the engines rattles a little less @ idle.

At one time, we owned a 2010 RX, which we thought was overly noisy, especially road noise at freeway speeds. Our (new to us) 2015 RX is much quieter, and I believe that the acoustic glass had a major impact on the reduction of road noise. Anyway, we're pleased with how quiet the 2015 is.

We just use regular gas, but make every attempt to use "ethanol-free" gas, as ethanol is not good for your fuel system/engine.

Thanks, We can't afford a 2015 and don't like the new "Bold" look. No offense

Any specific gen 3 year to avoid or any that were preferred?

EDIT: Sorry 2015's look nice. It's the next gen that are butt ugly

thx

bob

If I were buying a third gen, I would look for a 13-15. They made some nice changes on the 2013 refresh.

New steering wheel, updated nav system, new front end with LED running lights, blind spot monitoring, new tail lights, etc.

I have a MY13 and I don't think the front door windows are "double pane". Is there a way of identifying double pane vs regular single pane windows?

My windows have a slight ridge on the top edge of the entire window, like if they stuck two thin windows together. The windows seemed thicker than regular windows, hence my "double pane" theorem.

My 13 RX had them, and my current GS does. To see if you have them, look at the edge of the window when rolled down midway. You should be able to see two panes sandwiched together, like this:

Here's a YouTube video about the laminated front side window glass on the RX:

Bob, wind noise was reported by early 2010 RX owners. Lexus issued the attached TSIB to change the windows to acoustic glass. The affected VIN range is in the bulletin. It became standard after that.

For a comprehensive comparison thread (2010-2012 vx 2013-2015), Bert put together a great analysis here. Just disregard the 450h specific parts. Some other notable things, BOS (brake override) was added on 2011 RXs, premium fuel is required for 2010-2011 RX350s, regular fuel for 2012+ RX350s. 2010 RXs built before July 2009 have a sunglass holder instead of Lexus Enform. Oh, and I can't forget, 2010s have a 'balanced butt' The tailgate has the Lexus badge on the left and model on the right. The Lexus badge disappeared after that. There's more. I'd suggest starting with the FAQs thread, click on replies to bring the most popular threads to the top, and do searches for specific things. But remember, it's not a substitute for taking a long test drive. Good luck.

Agree, which is precisely why we now have a 2015 instead of any 2016+. IMHO, Lexus has taken that "spindle grill" waaay too far on all it's vehicles.

The complete Toyota line went way to far on the bold aggressive look, Hopefully they will come to their senses. Appealing to the young maybe?
