If RELIABILITY, SAFETY, LOWER RUNNING COST,and REASONABLY GOOD MPG are your top concerns, then the RX would be my top choice.

Next best, IMHO, is the Toyota Highlander. Cheaper to buy and MAYBE cheaper running cost too.

"Next best", IMHO, is the Porsche Cayenne/McCan. Both higher cost to buy and have higher running cost.

Looking back I would have considered the Subaru Forester as well. Drove a 2014 Acura MDX, but didn't like it at all. Liked the 2018 Honda Pilot, but the transmission scared me off. Too many reviews about problems with the new 9 speed.

It really depends upon what you want/need to do with your vehicle. Our 2015 RX350 FWD is my wife's daily driver. But I much prefer my 2013 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited. It is faster, quicker, has one of the best AWD systems on the planet, and can do so much more than our RX350 can. And it is much more fun to drive.

Mazda CX-9 is another reliable great driving choice. The Signature trim level is in RX territory feature wise.

We currently own a CPO 2015 RX350 which is my wife's vehicle and our first Lexus. Back in early 2017 when I was looking for mid size SUV for myself I test drove a lot of vehicles. I was hoping I'd like the 2017 RX350 but it just did not do it for me. I test drove the NX, Acura MDX, Acura RDX, MB GLC, BMW x3, Subaru Forester, Nissan Rogue (that was a mistake) and the Audi Q5 (2.0 and 3.0). I decided on a 2017 Q5 3.0. I loved the way it drove and was looking for something with a little get up a go. I passed on waiting for a 2018 Q5 since they moved manufacturing to Mexico and they eliminated the 3.0 supercharged engine. This is my first European car and went into it knowing that maintenance costs could be higher in the future, though the 2015 - 2107 Q5's have high reliability ratings. We still own a 2005 Sequoia and have a Honda and Nissan.
