Buying Advice Used RX450h vs. RX400? + Do the electric motors require servicing?
Hi guys, Considering a couple of used RX400h's - should I spend more for a used RX450h? Also, do the electric motor(s) on the fwd and awd ever require maintenance and servicing? From what I've read the battery pack is bulletproof- if cells fail, can they be replaced individually? Just search for a good used RX 350 instead? Thanks for any guidance.

Starting from the end.
No, they are not bulletproof and when cells start failing, you start dealing with cascading effect. Replace one, then another, and so on. They do run normally long time though. Very long. I am aware of 278 000 miles everything OEM Camry Hybrid. But that's ONE. You looking at about $3000 to replace battery with refurbished one and very careful technician to do the job. And a prayer it works. Folks that did do refurbished ones sorta start getting issues a year or so down the road.
Yes, like any AWD system hybrid SUV requires servicing. Rear differential and PSD - Power Split Device. They are said to be lifetime fluid. It's everyone's call. I could post pics of what ATF inside looks like after 50 000 miles. But it is literally no big deal to change. You have no driveshaft or transfer case for AWD on hybrid as rear drive is electric only.
No, MGs, motor generators, require no maintenance.
There was issue with failing brake actuators on hybrids. Highlander, Camry. Lexus was left out of recall, though it is identical power train to Highlander. Donno.
