Question History Report Question - Ambiguity

Just bought a beautilful RW350 2014 and have a question on its service history. At 18K there was a report of fluid on a boot and the service dept stated that it most likely came from overflow that resulted from calipers moved during replacement of front brakes "as they are new."

My concern is that there is nothing in the report mentioning brakes at all, much less replacement at such a low mileage. I'm going to try and attach a pdf of the history report, but if it doesn't work, the VIN is: 2T2ZK1BA8EC135605

Any light you could shine on this would help reduce my concern.

Thanks!

I agree the brake fluid on the steering rack where it was noticed could only come from the master cylinder overflow. As this is electric power steering there is no power steering fluid. However, the prior owner may have had the brakes replaced somewhere else besides a Lexus dealer, so it would not appear on the record. I think that is more likely given that the brake pads are new. If the pads were not Lexus/Toyota OEM pads, that would be another major indication they were done elsewhere and some fluid spilled when pushing the old pads back or bleeding the brakes. I would not worry about it unless your master cylinder appears to have a leak.

Interesting.

My guess would be that the previous owner could have decided to change the brake pads for whatever reason either his/her self or maybe at a independent repair shop.

It is true that the fluid can overflow when the brake pistons are pushed back, hence why a person doing the job should siphon off a bit of fluid from the reservoir when doing a pad change.

Does sound like a DIY brake job was performed.

It makes no sense sometimes , but a lot of DIY owners change out good OEM parts for "better" performing aftermarket parts even when the car is new.

Could be the case in your situation.

Seems like the original owner did not like the RX since he/she got rid of it before 20k miles it seems from the service history or just stop taking the car to Lexus for service.

How many miles did the RX when you bought it?

Only had 18,790 so the last history report entry was the last done, for sure. I'm going back to Carmax tomorrow for my 30 day check up and I'll get them to look them over and see what's what.

Maybe Carmax replaced the front brake pads. They should have record of any work they performed.

Just came from my appt wit Carmax. They checked and said the brakes are brand new on the front! Who knows... But they did treat me well. The tint on the passenger side window was loose at the bottom and they are replacing the tint. Also ordered a missing cargo hook and will mail it to me. I never thought to see if they could check within their network on the brakes though... Good thought Clutchless - I think I'll try calling and see if there is any way to check.
