The factory trans cooler is built into the radiator. So expect a high price from the dealer, if they will do it at all.

An aftermarket trans cooler could be added that fits in front of or behind your radiator, I have done this to a couple vehicles with known weak transmissions to lower the temperature and hopefully extend life. Here is some info http://www.bulkpart.com/transmission-cooler.html

Many shops that install hitches will also install extra transmission coolers.

You would need a wiring kit also. You can get a hitch and wiring kit at www.etrailer.com

I did. Didn't want a towing prep package. Just another item for the dealer to make money on.
I was not going to pay for a heavy duty alternator in a vehicle that has no alternator.

Got the Kurt hitch and the 4-pin adapter. The controller was missing, so I reused a generic one I already had. That's the only part that is important.
I do not really care for the trans cooler. I almost never tow over 2,000 lbs. I would question its need even if I was since the 450h does not have a traditional transmission.

Not trying to take this thread off topic, but I'll add this. My new 2015 RX 350 came with the tow package and for $245 I'm glad it did. I don't plan on adding a tow hitch unless I want to attach a bike rack, but I feel better knowing I have a heavy duty alternator, radiator and transmission cooler, even though I won't put an undue amount of stress on those components in my normal driving.

Back on topic ... I think as long as you aren't getting close to or exceeding the RX's towing capacity, and the towing doesn't occur frequently or for long distance you could get by without the tow package components. Just a personal opinion of course.

No tow package on mine, I did add a Curt hitch just to haul bicycles South in the winter.

Who would really choose a new RX for serious towing anyway?
It would be like marrying Kate Upton to mop your floors and fold your laundry.

I will be installing a hitch on my 2010 to tow my waverunner. It is not a heavy tow. I am not concerned with weight. I will assume for light tows the towing package is not really necessary. If I was buying a new vehicle I would probably get it from dealer.

^ ^ ^ ^ Agree, same here........... Curt hitch for around $140.00, no wiring needed to haul bicycles. Dealer wanted over $1000.00 for Lexus hitch. Just my 2 cents.

thank you everyone for your replies. i am contemplating the idea of a hitch. but i would feel a lot better if i could perform my own trans services (with out dancing through fire lit hoops just to get the correct fluid level)
