May I know, why my car is fitted with a shift lock button cover and when needed, has to yank out the cover and use the key and cause a lot of scratch damages ? The European LHD and the Asian RHD RX each has a convenient push button shift release.(please see below.) I want to change the compression spring and the button. Any members here tried that?

I suppose in America were too dumb to have an exposed button. Someone might (will) push the button and put the shifter into gear from the passenger side while the engine is running, then not be able to reach the brake pedal to stop the car from moving.
I don't need a protruding button. I have never needed to use the shifter release button - since the locking shifter mechanism came out 20 years ago. It might be nice for towing companies and mechanics.

How often do you use it to where you need a protruding button?

You would almost never use that button. Just throw a set of jumper cables in the trunk in case the battery is dead and you need to tow the vehicle. Chances are, if anything will be scratched, it is your bumper, when the tow guy uses a screwdriver to expose tow hook holes. No button there, even in EU models.

I think because of different countries/area/region has diffferent needs. In my area of residence, (i work in Cambodia) parking behind row of cars are very common, and at times the valet/secruity guard has to push the cars, so using this shift lock release button is very common.(release to N so the car can be pushed)

Another case is the folding mirror, it is almost mandatory the Asia region needs this feature desperately that even toyota Allion cars (corolla base) 2 years before the 3RX already provided these standard electrically operated folding mirrors convenience as opposed to USA model which is "not really necessary" as most owners have ample parking spaces in many places.

Your other option would be to add an electric button to engage the solenoid to release the shift lever.

I just want a simple button, I guess i have to live with it, just like no sunglass holder.
