on the top right corner of the shifter area, there is a small cap that is hiding the shift lever release button. You need you get a small screw driver to pry off the cover and then while pushing the button you can shifter the lever

even if you dont have enough battery to start the car, the only way to release the steering is if you can get the car in accessory mode, which is two pushes of the start button without pushing on the brake

If your car is stuck where you can't jump it, you still have some options. First, you can go down and buy a relatively cheap battery based jump start unit. These are small units that have a positive and negative cable that you just connect to your battery and start your car. They are rechargeable. Very easy to use and you will never need a second car for a jump start. A second option is to get a battery charger and just recharge the battery in place for a while. I have a charger that also has a jump start capability built-in ... picked it up at Walmart. If you own a battery based jump starter and a charger, you can handle almost any situation that comes along with your car, family members or friends. The new battery chargers with digital readouts are nice to have because they will evaluate your battery and tell you if the battery is good or needs to be replaced. This can save a lot of grief if you are having problems with your car.

My mom just got her 2013 RX 350 yesterday, and today I taught her how to use the features. Out of nowhere, the display turned off and the steering locked up. We didn't know how to start it, but finally we discovered that if you put your foot on the brake and try to start the car while wiggling the steering wheel it will unlock and the car will be fully functional. I think our car will is still having problems though.
