Default Not Available on the 2013 RX

I was advised today on "Lexus Chat" that the swivel headlights "Adaptive Front Lighting" are no longer available on the 2013 RX. Also, they advised that the "Automatic Headlight Dimmers" are not available on the 2013 RX. I could not find the above items listed in the 2013 RX Brochure on on the Lexus web site.

I have a 2013 with the comfort package that includes "auto leveling headlight". When you start the car at night the headlights raise up and down, then look normal. I don't really know what they are supposed to do.

I understand the Auto Leveling of the headlights is to insure they are not pointing up into other driver's vision and set according to the car's loading. I had the "Swivel" headlights on my 2011 RX and the low beam headlights swiveled on turns a few degrees to the left or right on turns. I think that the new HID Headlamps are bright and good enough that the Swivel headlights are not the big deal that they were last year.

Think of it as "one less system to fail in the future".

I still don't see a point of having the Swivel eyes, as it's already bright enough.

I have found the swivel lights helpful especially when you re driving on an unlit, curvy highway. The movement of the headlights provide that extra visibility which helps when you are travelling at highway speeds. Getting that extra second on seeing an animal jump out can make all the difference.

It's not the brightness that makes the difference - both systems use the same D4S HID bulbs.

Drive a car with the Adaptive Headlights (AFS) for a month, then drive one without it. You'll come to appreciate the AFS.

Cost cutting measure by Lexus. Plus there had to be advantages to paying more for their other vehicles. They are standard on the LS.

My 2010(h) has them along with the auto-dim feature. You're right, once used to it, not nice to take it away without something to absorb the 'withdrawal' .

Default 2013 Option RX

"■Automatic headlight leveling system (if equipped)
The level of the headlights is automatically adjusted according to the number of
passengers and the loading condition of the vehicle to ensure that the headlights do
not interfere with other road users." (from user manual)

I had a 2000 ES that only had the vertical auto-levelling, and now own a 2005 LS that has both vertical and horizontal. The LS has such a wide beam that I have not personally seen a real need for the horizontal movement.
I also hear that it is expensive to replace if things go wrong with it (e.g. motor burns out, damage during accident, etc): about $1K per side on my 2005 LS, and significantly more per side on the 2013 LS.

AGREED! This is one of the reasons I'm hanging onto my '08 400h.
