7 months 14 days

That's how long it took for a person on a cell phone to back out of their parking space and smack into the side of my RX. $2K in damage according to the estimate I got today and I am certain the cost will only go up from there. I'll upload pics later today.

Idiot

I'm so sorry to hear that....

MX5NES350, what happened to you is my worst fear every time I drive thru a parking lot. In fact, it almost happened to me this past weekend. As I was driving cautiously to the exit a guy just starts backing up right into the side of my car. I slammed on brakes and horn (don't know what good stopping would have done). Then as I start up he starts backing again! More horn and brakes...IDIOT!

(This is probably me in 10 more years. My dad now pulls forward into a parking spot until he bumps the car in front of him. He says, it's just a little bump.)

Phoning when driving is forbidden... that's what you should tell this undesirable driver...Not phone unless you use the bluetooth system because you have 2 hands available, you can turn your head to see what's happening around you... but if discussion is too serious... stop driving... because it's too dangerous and unsafe, your attention is captivated by the dialogue not on driving considerations, but on your discussion... till you dramatically injure somebody for life.
Never forget that human brain can never, never and never do 2 things at the same time (impossible!) you switch but never do at the same time. Bear this in mind and tell this around you (if this can save a life one day it's already a positive behaviour.

I'm very sorry MX5N. I'm always extra careful in parking lots where there is a mass of humanity with cars. There are lots of distractions for drivers with people they're with chatting at them. Another sign of the times is everyone's in a rush or at least think they are. $2,000 doesn't sound like much damage, what with the cost of car parts and labor these days. Make sure you get genuine Lexus parts used rather than the cheap knock-offs.

That's how long I can tell I owned a new car. When it's brand new I park way out in the sticks. Away from any cars. The longer I have the car. The closer I get to the front door of the store.

I had a nice corner spot, as I usually look for, and it was GREAT. Back out and start down the aisle towards the exit and then BOOM! All of a sudden I am a few inches perpendicular to my travel lane. Thankfully nobody was hurt and it can be fixed. Usually I get rid of a car after it's been in any sort of accident other than a minor ding from a shopping cart but I really like this one so I am keeping it.

So I have a door (plus some antenna scratch on the front passenger door), moulding, wheel, tire, mudguard and whatever else the Lexus body shop (not "Lexus" but it's who the dealer uses) comes back with. My traction control light now is coming on periodically so I am sure there is something amiss there as well. Taking it tomorrow for the inspection since I got the $2K estimate today from my insurance company.

Her insurance will be getting the bill but my insurance wants to get me fixed straight away.

Sorry to hear about this. It's all our worst nightmare. Good luck with the repairs!

kitlz 06-19-12 05:03 PM

That's a sad sight  I hope you get your RX fixed soon and it turns out well.

That is really a tough break. I'm a pretty conservative driver (retired and rarely in a hurry) and won't attempt to drive by a car with their backup lights on. I just assume they want to back up and don't mind letting them safely get out of their parking spot.

Texas,
Get your dad some bumper-mounted parking sensors!

Her insurance will be getting the bill but my insurance wants to get me fixed straight away.

Why not go with her insurance instead? to avoid 2 things:

1. Deductible ( whether it's 500 or 1,500)
2. RECORD of Claim from your insurance Co. which they can use to jack up the price of your premium even though it's not your fault.. it will still be written as a Claim.

Normally, even if you go with "her" insurance, the whole process takes 5 business days..

MX5NES350 06-20-12 05:48 AM

I'm letting Allstate (my insurance) pay for it now and they will go after Progressive for the bill. She admitted fault to the officer who wronte the report so there isn't any doubt there. I figure it will be a couple weeks until it goes in but will find out more today or tomorrow.

Sevn86 06-20-12 09:20 PM

Oh man that really sucks!

MX5NES350 06-25-12 05:44 AM

$1600 in damage... IF I do not need a new door - which the body shop is pretty sure I will and so am I. It will be going in third week of July after I return from taking it on a road trip.
