I know that in the last 25 years or so that I've been driving various vehicles, which were all Japanese vehicles; a Mazda and several Nissans, that my oil changes were always done at 3,000 miles. Then I got the 2007 RX350 and it changed to every 5,000 miles, and I really liked that! Now with the 2010, it's been changed to every 10,000. I'm really liking that! yeah!

I was unaware that the Canadian owner's manual was different than the US manual. That does not make any sense to me, but then again I am not a Lexus automotive engineer. My point is this: READ THE MANUAL and do what it tells you to do. If you decide to change the oil more frequently to make yourself feel better, so be it. As for our Canadian friends, I am sorry that you are required to change more frequently than those of us in the US.

Normal driving conditions at 10,000k. Not many of us fall into this category. Hot weather, cold, city driving, short trips are not considered normal. Short trips are the worst. Unless you have had YOUR oil analyzed you really do not know what it is doing in your car. Besides it is the oil filter that scares me the most going that long.

Here it is in writing. This overrides your manual at this point.

To better quanitify when to change your oil in the RX, I recommend you have an "oil analysis" service periodically to help you determine the best mileage range for the oil change. The firm I use is Blackstone Labs, based in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, to analyze every 3rd oil change or so. They will send you an analysis kit which makes it very easy to do. They even send your report via e-mail as an attachment file.

I wonder if by following this 10k oil change will void the warranty that says change every 5k?

Lexus sent out an updated maintenance requirements brochure last year to those who fell under the old 5K oil change, me being one of them. It now states oil changes are 10K. No worries about the warranty being voided.

for those of you change the oil yourself do you guys have problem removing the filter? I know the longer you wait to change the oil the harder it is to remove the oil filter.

I drive mainly fwy (70% fwy) so i pretty much change my oil on my IS at around 7500 miles interval with M1syn oil - i notice the filter is harder to remove compare to 5k service.

Now that RX is at every 10k I wonder if it's going to be harder for DIY.

After passing my 10,000 mile service interval I will begin changing my own oil/filter. Shaolin, may I suggest that when attaching the wrench to your filter that you also include a breaker bar. This will give you more leverage thus making it far easier to remove the filter.

Thanks. That's my plan too and I think we better start looking for better wrench option than the one selling at sewell....

Since they call for first 5k miles free oil change and after that I will do 6k/6months (DIY) bought oil filter at
Sewell Lexus, oil filter wrench at Amazon.Probably will spent around 40 dollars per oil change, did stock up
royal purple/castrol edge 0w-20 when they are on sale.Since I dont have to raise the front all accesible
maybe 20 minutes or less, depends on how the dealer tighten drain plug and oil filter,I hope on spec.
so I dont have hard time loosening them. They say oil is cheap but engine expensive.I could easily follow
12months and 10k change,I'm from old scholl better safe than sorry. And plan to check oil level and all fluids
at least once a month.Thanks !!!

I don't think it's free oil change at 5k; it's regular 5k check up and first free oil change at 10k. At least that's here in so cal..

Shaolin is correct, the 5K service doesn't include an oil change.

Mine is a '10 CPO I purchased with 20K miles 6 months ago. Shortly after my purchase I took to the dealer to have some noise in the rear hatch door corrected and I asked the service rep about the oil interval change and he said it was at every 10K miles but I guess they never ajusted the oil light since it just came on at 25K, so do I just reset this myself?

Thanks!

From the 3RX FAQ thread:

Display trip meter A, then turn power off.
While pressing the ODO/TRIP button, turn the power switch to on mode.
Keep the ODO/TRIP button pressed for about five seconds. Reset is complete when 000000 in the trip meter flashes once and the message in the multi-information display disappears.
