Black Sapphire Pearl - was this color phased out?
Hi all, was just wondering if anyone knew why this color was phased out? Was there an issue with quality control? did it peel or something?
Anyone have this color? Would be grateful if you could tell me how easy it was to maintain or if you had any issues with it.
Please forgive me if this has been answered somewhere else, im new to this forum and am doing some research before i join the club!
Thanks.

Many possibilities here:
1) Black sapphire pearl is completely gone out of the Lexus line up, the RX was the last model to still have it. The color has been replaced on most lexus model with "Deep Sea Mica" which is a tad lighter in color
2) NONE of the Lexus SUVs get this deep sea mica, it is reserved for the sedans. Perhaps Lexus thought that it didnt look good on a large body. Or perhaps its a cost thing.
3) As mentioned in the other thread, the black sapphire made light scratches and swirls very visible. I dont believe it had any metallic flakes and that of course makes things easier to see.

The Black Sapphire does have metallic flakes. The color can change, to either dark blue, dark purple color or black, depending on the lighting. I've had it on my 2010 rx for 2 years, very happy with it!

I personally love the color too. I bought the last 2010 on my dealers lot last fall vs a 2011 at that point just so i could have this color. No problems as of yet, but shes only 7 months old. I also had severe vandalism done to my car and the entire car other than the roof needed to be repainted. Luckily the shop my dealer sent my car to for paint does quality work and the paint job looked marvelous! Can't tell the difference between factory paint and this shops paint and shes as beautiful as ever! I personally think its a great color and I say scoop it up before someone else grabs that color! lol

Lexus, like most makers, drops certain colors after a few years in favor of something else. It's no reflection on quality, it's just the nature of the business. I like the Black Sapphire Pearl on my wife's RX. It is a bit harder to keep clean than the Tungsten Pearl on my IS but once a week over at the $1.50 coin wash brings it back to looking good.

I absolutely agree with you. I have a 2007 ES 350 in BSP and love it. I am thinking about getting an RX 350 but cannot stand the 2011 lineup of colors on the RX, half of which are some shade of black. Heck, I can't even tell the difference between Obsidian and Black. Who makes these decisions?

Obsidian is straight black. Stargazer black (which I have) is a beautiful metallic black that in the sunlight makes the car have a bronze-ish tone to it, kind of like a darker truffle mica.
There are only two blacks. If anything there are like 5 silvers.

Agree, I guess I just count the grays as a shade of black. They need a return of the deep blue or even deep green, in my view.
