Hello all....I'm down here in the low desert (Palm Springs, CA) and our temps go 100+ in May through September. I'm going to be DIY-ing the oil changes from here on out and recording all my maintenance on My Lexus Drivers. So the question is 0W-20 in the desert heat or 5W-20 which is more readily available. Good thread so far.

According to the book it's still 0w5w, but you might want to talk about your driving conditions with a Lexus service manager.

I believe that 5W-20 is not a fully synthetic oil. I live in Phoenix and I use the 0W-20W and after 2 years no problems.

Seems that the 0W would mainly help with colder weather starts while the two oils would be similar when running at higher summer heat conditions.

Thanks to all....I'm going to stay with the 0W-20. Was down at Wal-mart and they have a few brands of it. Mobil 1 going for $6.79. Works for me.

Probably a good choice. Staying with what Lexus recommends and they should have your back. Just keep receipts for everything if you do your own work and it wouldn't hurt to log onto the Lexus maintenance records site and record the work there too.

You will be fine with either one. I'm in TX and my Camry runs above 100 degree weather in the summer. Sometimes they don't stock the 0W20 so I go with 5W20 with no ill effects. As long as you stay synthetic you should have no issues. Walmart usually carries the 5Qt 0w20 for $25.

Thanks Jim for the maintenance records tip. I'm already registered on the Lexus Drivers Site and printed up all the records, and can add my own. Great service for us Lexus drivers.

I would use whatever it says in the owner's manual or the oil fill cover. They both should say the same thing.

My dealer puts in 0W20, same as what the maintenance and owner's manuals state.

I have a 2008 rx350 - would it be ok to use synthetic 0-20w or 5-20w mobile !

Hello. Recently purchased a 2010 RX350 with 150,000km. I have maintenance records and oil changes have been done frequently with 0w20. There was one time a non Lexus dealer used for some reason 5w30. The mechanic that I get service done, has experience with Toyota products for a number of years and recommended I switch to 5w30 full synthetic to help with the longevity of the V6. Is there anyone here that actively runs 5w30? Also wondering if I switch oil now will there be any problems? I do live in an area where in the winter there is the odd few days that it can be -40C.

It won't make any difference as there are other Lexus & Toyota vehicles, such as the ES350, with the same engine that at one time specified 5w-30 but later changed it to 0w20 to improve corporate gas mileage averages. It will reduce your gas mileage a bit and depending on how cold it gets in your location may not lubricate as fast on a cold day cold start. It may make the engine quieter and reduce the start up rattle if you have it.
