Auto High Beams?
Hey Guys,
I was driving my 450h yesterday night on a clear road, and I did not notice the auto high beams turn on. How do I configure them or whatever? I was reading around and if the protector lenses is closer to the center ofter car on the headlights, than you are equipped with the feature, so after checking out my car, it should function.
I had to manually turn them on when I needed them.

To activate, and it's better to do this at night, make sure your headlights are on auto. Push the headlight lever forward. A headlight will appear in the instrument panel with auto underneath. The auto high beams won't turn on often or at all if the streets have lamps. They do turn off quickly when another car approaches. It also senses if there is a car in front pretty well too.
I turned mine off since they didn't come on very often and it's congested by me.

The main reason I turned this feature off on my 2010 RX 450h is that it will not work at low speed. A lot of my driving is in the city and the main place I use the high beams is in subdivisions, where I am usually at a fairly low speed. It may be great on the highway, but it is a waste of time for us city folks.
If you're pulling the lever toward you and holding it to get the high beams to stay on all the time you need to read the manual to understand the proper operation of the switch.

By the way, AFS is absolutely great. It's so much smoother than the '04. Any decision yet for you?
I understand that on cars without auto highbeams, pushing it forward locks it in place and keeps the high beams on at all times. Pulling it forward is just a quick flash, unless you hold it in place. But it sounds like to turn on the auto highbeams, you push it forward where it locks, meaning it cant have the highbeams on all the time unless you pull it towards you and hold it?
lol very confusing conversation.
I love the AFS too, I cant say that its essential, but its nice to see it move. its coming soon

If you put the light switch in the AUTO position, and push it forward, this will activate the auto highbeams.
If you want the highbeam to be on all the time, you just need to put the light switch to the ON position and push it forward like any other Lexus.

Yeah - it is a little confusing.
There are the stalk settings and the dial settings (on the end of the stalk).
If you turn the headlight dial to 'on' then you would use them like regular headlights. Pull the stalk for a flash, push the stalk forward to turn on the hi-beams and then middle is regular headlights.
If you turn the dial to 'auto'(with the auto hi-beam feature) then you just push the stalk forward and leave it there. If you need emergency hi-beams (or you want to flash someone) then you just pull the stalk toward you (it's 2 positions at that point) like you normally would.
I agree with one of the previous posts about probably turning off the auto hi-beams as I do a lot of suburban neighborhood driving and I don't go fast enough to activate the hi-beams automatically. I can pull the stalk back but that's a pain to have to hold it there (there is no stop position - it's really just made for flashing your hi-beams) while driving. I also don't like when the hi-beams turn off automatically at the lower speeds b/c I often want them on when I'm at a stop sign and want to see something before I head off or make a turn.
I could just turn the dial setting to 'on' but then you lose the automatic functions of auto on/off as well as the auto hi-beams. I like when the lights turn on at dusk and off when it's brighter out. The only way I can keep this function and not have the auto hi-beams is to have the dealer deactivate the auto hi-beam function.
Clear as mud?
