RX350 Transmission Oil Change (merged threads)
#136
Well I am at 60,000 with my 012. Got a quote from Toyota 480, to do the transmission ( 288), diff and transfer case fluid change. Called a guy I used to go to that has had a transmission shop for 40 years. Transmission with a filter change 150. He also said the only time they do a diff or transfer case change is if they need them. He said if he feels that there is a any suspected breaking down of the then he would recommend doing them. His four wheel aor AWD service is 89.00

2010 RX 450h CVT total fluid amount
Sorry if this has been asked , but does anyone know the total amount of fluid a 2010 450h CVT holds? I just replaced 4 quarts Toyota ATF fluid at 58,000 and wanted to calculate the percentage that was replaced. I 'm figuring 4 quarts in another 10, 000... then every 20,000 to 30,000 after that.

On the hybrid, 4 quarts is the total amount. There is no torque converter. It is like a manual transmission. Drain, then fill until fluid comes out the fill hole and you are done. I have had 2 hybrids, a Lexus CT200h and my current Lexus HS250h and both were the same. I am sure the RX 450h is the same. Thus you have changed all the fluid and do not need to do it again for another 20 or 30 thousand miles, depending on how obsessive you want to be with maintenance. Look in the hybrid sub forum for more information.

Thanks. Good info to know as I have both the CT200h and RX450h. Will do trans oil changes soon.
Where do you get the auto trans fluid from? Dealer or online aftermarket?

Thanks for the info Clutchless, I should be good for another 30,000.
Something I should note... up until I changed the fluid, my mileage, computer and calculated, had been slowly dropping. Where once I had of over 30 on trips and 26.5 overall, it was now 25.5 trips and 24.5 overall.
Last year I blamed it on Michelin Prem LTX tire that I added. My assumption may not have been totally correct. I did notice a 1-2 mpg drop from the Yokohamas, but I must say they are now solid footed tire and well worth the drop.
Here is the surprise... After changing the transmission fluid my computer indicated 30 + on several local trips. Calculated long hand on 1/8 tank it was 27. I should get a full tank reading in about a couple weeks.
Also to add the a/c was on all the time, and outside temp was between 75 to 90 in the day.
If this 2-4 mpg bump is for real, then the $40 fluid change will pay for itself in 4 months.
I am just sorry I did not listen to my intuition and started fluid changes at 30,000. This is one car I feel could easily go 200,000 miles.

lexusrus - At first I only used Toyota WS fluid in the hybrids as I believed the mumbo jumbo about it having magic properties and the hybrid power transfer case (i.e. transmission) had electrical wiring that the WS would not harm, but other fluids may harm. I bought it at the local Toyota dealer who recently raised prices to over $10 a quart! Some dealers are a bit cheaper.
However, after much searching and reading at bobishteoilguy and priuschat, I found folks who had been using any old compatible fluid (Maxlife) with no issues for over 30,000 miles. Thus, on my last change on the HS250h I used the Mag1 low viscosity synthetic ATF as I had 4 quarts left over from the couple of cases I bought for the RX. It has run fine ever since.
You can get the Mag1 on Amazon for far less for a case of 6 per my link in post #122. Good luck and your mileage may vary.

I change it every 50,000 Km a whole change made by a machine. My previous experiece with MB has shown me the fallacy of never changing it. This is if you're going to keep the car for a long time or you like the tranny to be in tip-top shape. Some say to change it every 60,000 Km (40 miles) I prefer to do it sooner. My Lexus dealer also recommends changing it every 50-60,000 Km and has a machine to perform the task.
I remember when MB recommended no tranny fluid changes and transmissions were failing left & right, they changed then to change it only once at 39,000 miles that improved it, but still many failures, so then they sent out a bulletin to change it every 49,000 miles. This no change is strictly a marketing ploy to make it appear that no maintenance is required. Don't change it at your own risk !!
