Getting Rid Of New Car Smell
How do I eliminate the smell in my 2010 RX? I know people brag about the new car smell, but I find the smell in my 2010 Rx overpowering and not very pleasent. I would like to get rid of the smell.
Thanks,
Wes

So far, I've left the windows open in the garage, as well as, in the driveway. I've sprayed Febreze air freshener in the car and put clothes dryers fabric softener sheets in the car. While I'm sure the "loaded baby diaper" would change the smell, I don't think it would improve the smell.
Thanks to all for the inputs and I'll continue to leave the windows open to try to eliminate the smell.

for our 10RX, it took about two weeks to "not notice" the toxic plastic smell. what i did was i had the car parked outside in the sun so it will accelerate the "baking" of the plastics. after first two weeks we drove with window down, the "good" new car smell is all left behind after two weeks and the car is parked inside away from the sun.

The smell is sometimes off-gassing from the vinyl - it's the same reason you end up with that "film" on the inside of the windshield of new cars for awhile.
I think the danger is overstated. If you're moving air in any way while you're in the car (e.g. air is coming out of the vents), I'm sure you're fine. I haven't heard of a single death yet from new car smell, so relax and enjoy it while it lasts.

Well, I for one am disappointed that there was only one amusing suggestion to this post (the diaper under the seat). I keep coming back hoping that someone will post a suggestion trying to come up with a more creative way to remove that smell - I was really hoping for some laughs. I guess there's just a higher class of poster on these threads - darn!!
But in all seriousness, one thing you might want to consider is not using the recirculate setting for the climate control It might not cool quite as well during the summer but it will keep you from recirculating that smell over and over and help to remove some of it if you are driving with the windows open.
I know what you are talking about with the smell but it doesn't bother me quite that much. I can see how it would be more bothersome if you have sensitivities to these types of things.
Keep us posted!

Thanks for all the inputs. I continue to park the car in the driveway with the windows, moon roof and back door open. Since I live in Florida, I have to keep my ears alert for thunder which will signal possible rain.
So far, I believe parking in the driveway is helping to decrease the smell.
Thanks again,
Wes
