Default ignition switch problem.

ignition switch problem.
I am afraid I have an upcoming problem with my ignition switch. When I shut the engine off and remove the key the car does not recognize the key has been removed. The steering wheel does not retract. Does not do it all the time. Any suggestions.

There is a switch built into the ignition switch assembly (Lexus calls it the ignition lock cylinder housing) that the key operates. This tells the car computer that the key has been inserted. Your problem could be this switch. But it could also be a steering column problem.

When the key is in the ignition and the engine is not running, you cannot lock the doors with the key fob or the switch on the master window switch panel.. So if the key is out and you can lock the doors, you have a steering column problem.

Thanks! I can not lock the car with the key out (sometimes). Today I sprayed the cylinder with graphite hoping it was just a stuck tumbler. I will wait and see. If that does not work I am hoping I can remove the ignition lock cylinder housing and bring it to a locksmith for rebuilding.

Here is a thread on removing theignition lock cylinder housing. Depending on your skills and tools available, it may or may not be a challenge for you.

Hi dennisofne,

Please let us know if you get this fixd, what product you used, how you did it, etc.

For your consideration
Reason I ask is because I would like to link everyone's work and the contributions on this thread to a "All About Keys' master thread for others that may need this info, especially me. lol
Pics are appreciated too.

you make a post saying that you fixed the problem and tell us how you fixed it. Kinda like you just did. By the way, excellent job.

I agree with Dennismik, it don't get any easier than that.
Honestly I thought you'd be tearing down the steering column to fix it.
I'll pick up a can of graphite since prob a good idea to have some anyway, TY, and I added a link to ya'll work to master key thread I'm working on.
