What is black box under the drivers seat

What is black box under the drivers seat
While packing her 2005 RX330 for the trip back to college, my daughter noticed a "black box" under the drivers seat. Upon examination the D-sub connector that goes to the box was disconnected. Can somebody tell me what the box is for and why the connector might be disconnected?

Yes, looks like about 16 pins. There's also a small diameter cable, maybe coax - RG58 size. The car is now back in Lincoln, NE but maybe my daughter can take a photo.
