Mobil-1 5W-30 Oil & Mobil 1 M1-102 Oil Filter

Due for an oil change, planning to use Mobil-1 5W-30 Oil & a Mobil 1 M1-102 Oil Filter.
Presently the RX330 has 139,000 miles, there is a sticker from some Jiffy type oil change outfit done by the previous owner indicating the oil change should be changed at 140,000 miles.
I realize conventional oil is fine for an RX330 as long as it's changed in 3,000 miles although wary regarding the quality of oil & oil filters these Jiffy outfits provide for $29.95.
No issues as far as the engine goes to date.
I will DIY with the Mobil 1, I also plan to tow a U-Haul 6X12 trailer for about 700 miles to move & the weight restrictions will be respected.
I am counting on the vehicle running a little cooler with Mobil 1 with the extra weight.
Mobil-1 5W-30 Oil & a Mobil 1 M1-102 Oil Filter, has anyone done an oil change with this combination?
Also, looking ahead, at what millage should the oil be changed with Mobil 1?

Yes, I have used that combination. As for mileage before changing again, what mileage do you use with other DIY oil/filter combinations?
(Jiffy type oil change places don't count because one main difference is that they don't drain out as much old oil as a DIY person might.)

jmu2004 06-07-17 08:39 AM

If you are going to be towing anything, I would suggest a drain and fill of your ATF as well. Towing is much harder on the transmission than the engine....and temps on the ATF are critical. Older fluid loses it's ability to dissipate heat.

Just an FYI, and since you are under the car anyway, it might add another 20 minutes to your DIY.

Lexuswiz 06-07-17 08:53 AM

I haven't used that exact combo but I do use Mobil 1 5W-30 every 5K miles. Although I have heard nothing bad about Mobil 1 oil filters, I have a connect at Toyota and get my oil filters in bulk for cheap for a fleet of cars so I use OEM on my 330.

Also as jmu2004 mentioned, keep up with the trans and diff/transfer case when it comes to hauling/towing.

Regardless of what kind of oil your using I won't go beyond 6000 miles between oil changes. Full synthetic certainly does keep it's viscosity longer than the dino stuff but particulates in the oil is still an issue.

Been using Synthetic, I change oil between 6.5 to 7K miles. At the time of changing the oil still looks ok, with slight darkness. It is working!

To the OP, with 139K miles on the odometer, should you be using the high mileage Mobil-1??

Thanks to all for the responses, actually was planning to also a Drain & Fill at the same time with Toyota ATF T-IV as I have a feeling this was never done by the previous owners.
No issues with the transmission to date although at 139,000 miles it is due plus I have read some threads on CL previously with regards to towing & a drain & fill was highly recommended.
Also I will make sure I tow with the transmission on 4, not on D.
The differential was leaking when I purchased the RX, the seal was replaced & my mechanic pumped in a good amount of differential oil, no issues there.
When I purchased the vehicle recently I noticed the oil was changed last by the previous owner at one of these Jiffy oil outfits & I would do a DIY when the time comes with a quality oil & oil filter.
Those Jiffy oil change outfits give me stomach aches, I never ever brought a vehicle to one of those outfits.
Mobil 1 High Millage is an issue to obtain on this tiny Island & $$$ to purchase & ship, therefore Mobil 1 was on sale, figured I will go for that.
I will most likely do the next oil change between 5,000 & 6,000 miles as I do not plan to do any more towing after this one.

On high mileage oil, word of caution is that they are reported to have agents that swell seals and cause other changes which make it questionable as to whether switching back to non-high mileage would cause problems. IOW, once started down the high mileage oil path, it's probably best to stay on it.
(Full disclosure, I have an 18-yr old vehicle that is on high mileage oil and a 12-yr old RX330 that I'm in no hurry to start on it.)

And if you normally change oil between 5 and 6k, I personally would not do differently because of your near future towing plans. M-1 is a good oil that isn't going to 'wear out' prematurely within 6k because of your plans, and their filters are relatively premium compared to some others.

My main suggestion for DIY oil changes is to let the draining continue while the person goes do something else, preferably for an hour or more. Then come back, close everything up, add new oil, and enjoy the feeling of refreshed engine lubrication.

Personally I was never committed to the High Millage oil, I just researched prices, pros & cons in various oils.
When Mobil 1 was available on sale, I had a feeling it was the right choice although some feedback from CL Members with experience with the product is certainly assuring.
Looking forward to the after towing in 2 months & will post how all went.

RE: high mileage oils, I made the switch in my older car because it developed a mysterious, very slow oil leak. It was so slow that it was borderline as to whether it was worth tracking down. It was already well within the 'high mileage oil' range and so the switch was an attempt to see if the leak would slow further or stop.
RE: experience with M1 oil, I use it in another vehicle that takes over 8 quarts with a filter change. I regularly exceed 7k between oil changes there.

M1 is famous for its cleaning ability, so don't be surprised to see it get dark fairly quickly the first time you use it, especially if the vehicle has been run with Dino oil on extended intervals. The color of the oil is not necessarily an indicator of its remaining life. I run m1 in several of my vehicles. Don't expect your engine to run any cooler with M1 unless you are having some sort of lubrication issues currently with oil. 5-6 k intervals or once a year is the OCI for us , could probably run longer but oil's cheap and I load up when it's on sale.

Lexuswiz 06-08-17 07:25 AM

FYI, for any US members, Costco is having a sale on M1 oil. $10 off their normal price of $35.99 for 6 quarts. Compare that to Walmart at ~$23 for 5 quart.

You practically need a bank loan to purchase Mobil 1 on this tiny island in Canada, normal price for 4.4L jug $60. + $14. for an extra liter. $74.
The sale price was $28. 4L jug + $14 for an extra liter $42.
The jugs alone will fall short for an oil change for a RX330.

WOW. Come over to the states LOL.
