Default Rear Diff Leak

Wife was complaining about a hum coming from the rear end. At about 170K miles, I was thinking a wheel bearing. So I jacked up the rear end and the passenger side wheel definately makes more noise than the drivers side. While it was up, I slid under for a quick look around and noticed this...

Not good. Axle seals would probably be pretty easy, but I doubt the pinion seal is. It isn't leaving oil on the floor, just flinging it all around. It's due for a drain and change, so I am thinking about filling with 75W140 instead of 75W90. Any thoughts?

In my case....Had a differential leak when I first purchased my RX330, it was leaving drops on the ground, although no noise whatsoever. It was the Pinion Seal, $20 for the Seal. It was the dead of winter therefore my mechanic replaced it, (charged me $50 labor.), he did mention he was pleased to see the parts & bolts leading to it weren't rusted therefore made the job much easier than usual. Although you are correct, not an easy job, at the end of the day pleased he did the job. When I first showed him the leak he mentioned although there is a drip, he believed not enough oil was lost to damage the differential therefore booked me an appointment for in 2 weeks time. Then again your case my differ, just thought I would share my experience.Hopefully all works out for you.
