Default HELP: 2007 RX350 high idle P0015 fault code

Help please

My 2007 RX350 won't idle below 1800rpm in neutral and 1200rpm when in gear. Also showing fault code P0015 which indicates "B" camshaft position timing over retarded (Bank 1).

However car runs perfectly. Easy start. No timing chain rattle, very smooth, no noises. No stalling. With P0015 you would expect strange noises and rattles. And strangely, the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp, a.k.a. the check engine light) does not come on.

Read more at: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0015

Any ideas please? Can't see how the high idle and P0015 can be related. Have checked for inlet manifold leaks and throttle-body gasket leaks. All clear. Air cleaner is also new with no obstructions.

Could there be an internal leak within the throttle body? Don't see how? What about cam sensors?

Any Toyota / Lexus techs out there please?

Cheers, David

David,

I have the same year RX350. If there is one thing you can count on with these first-year 2GRFE creations, it's that the "check-engine" light does not go away easily. If you have a persistent condition, it would be on, or coming on every time it occurs. Since you state that it is not on, I would not worry about the code too much.

If you are more careful than I am, get a decent scanner and check WHEN that code was generated. If it is old, erase it and see if it comes back. If it does not, you can move on to other problems. I assure you, they will be forthcoming...

As to the high idle issue, usually known as "rough idle" here in the states, it is a fairly common condition in places where the air is usually dry and there is a fair amount of dust. Especially if you are on the cost-conscious side when buying fuel and/or neglect to replace the air filter on time. Happens on all sorts of cars, I am afraid. The culprit is usually somewhere in the air intake system, up to and including the throttle body.

There is (usually) a pretty straightforward solution. Clean your entire air intake system, all the way to the throttle body. Even if the problem is elsewhere, it is a good idea for a car that old. Don't forget the idle control valve.

There is a ton of videos on Youtube about that. Search for "rough idle."

Have you checked the throttle body? Mine was the exact opposite, I had low rpm when I started the car. I checked the throttle body and it was full of gunk. Cleaned it out with some brake cleaner and she's as good as new.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Now I have another problem. Once warmed up, the coolant empties itself and drains the radiator via the overflow bottle. It's like the water pump is putting out ultra high pressure. I have changed the thermostat to no avail.

I wonder if all these faults are related? Maybe a faulty waterpump?

Crazy !!!!!!
