Foam in the in-cabin air filter

It could be the remnants of foam parts from a previous filter. In any event, I would change this nasty filter and periodically check the new filter for any loose foam. I change the cabin filter every year or 15K miles whichever is first.

Foam is used on the dampers/doors in the system that direct the air to windshield, dash, floor outlets. Deterioration of the foam is common with age. I would replace the foam seals only if the dash was being removed for A/C evaporator replacement. Do it all at once.
