Upper air box..mesh filter clean out?

Upper air box..mesh filter clean out?
Hi gang, might be a silly question here. When j open the air filter housing... it i turn over the upper part there is a kinda filter mesh, if you will. Does that ever need to be changed or cleaned out?

It's a charcoal filter that's supposed to be left alone/not serviced. Probably there because of California's strict regulations. Mine was disgusting looking so I just took a soldering iron and melted all the rivets and pulled it out. Did it made a difference? Probably nothing I could feel, but I imagine it's a small restriction in the air box. I mainly deleted it out of principle more than anything. I didn't want anything breaking down from the filter and going into the engine

I imagine it does. Mine emitted a nice smoke cloud when I whacked it and it smelled dirty. I could hardly see light through it at that point so I felt obligated to delete it.

I also deleted the that filter as well.......Since your there, greattime to clean out the bottom of the filter box.......I've been using a K&N drop in filter.....
