New owner of a 08 rx 350 160k NOISE from timing cover
So this will be my third lexus.. Need your guys help on this one. It's got a strange noise coming from the left side center of the engine near the timing cover near the pulleys. Everything sounds perfect except this strange noise . Sounds weird kinda hard to describe. Kinda da like a gnawing sound idk. I know these engines don't have timing belts. So maybe noise is from the guides? I will post a video on my YouTube channel shortly. But if anybody recognizes this sympton share some knowledge llease.please..

So I read up on the subject but not sure if that's what I'm experiencing. First of all everyone says it's a startup rattle but my startup is fine I don't hear anything . It's a noise that is there constant while the engine is running. Oil is real dark as well . Looks abused and neglected. Can these vvti things grenade an engine??? Let me post the video.

The VVTi cannot grenade the engine, it has "hard" limits, whether working properly or not.
However, an overly stretched chain, or failing chain tensioner and/or chain guides might. Old dirty oil has got to be bad for everything, start by changing it mayhaps?

Change the Oil and filter with some good synthetic oil like Amsoil 5w30 100% synthetic, remove the VVT Solenoids and see if the screens are clogged up,if they are clean them out, my 2007 Lexus RX350 also has neglected Maintenance from the previous owner, my last 2 Oil changes,3,000 miles apart, the Oil filter cartridge was Completely Clogged up and I used an OEM Oil filter cartridge

I can definitely hear the noise on the top end, probably from Oil starvation, the Oil filter cartridge is probably plugged/clogged up, change the Oil and Prey the noise goes away 🙏

Water pump is going out or a bad pulley on drive (serpentine) belt. Remove the belt and spin everything. You can even start it for a very short period (belt drives wp) to see if noise goes away with belt off.
Seems same as this (was water pump): https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...ied-noise.html
