I ordered a K&N 33-2260 air filter for my RX330. No matter which way I try to install it, it is too thick to fit in the air box. the rubber flange is a bit too thick for the air filter cowl to just snap into place.

The bolt on the other side doesn't close.. any suggestion? Thanks!

Default My experience

On my previous car, 98 BMW Z3, I did a full tune up after buying it. Car was fun before, but the original filter was trash. The first thing I did was replace the filter and that made a HUGE difference. Completely changed the car. I loved the K&N filter I had. Spark plugs work wonders too, if they are due to be changed.

Seeming as I just bought my 350 in January, I don't think I need to replace the filters yet. When I do, I might upgrade my plugs too.

My main concern was throwing a code from a new filter and only one person said they had that happen. I'm hoping the combination of Magnaflow and K&N will improve throttle response even more than what I got from the muff, it made me hungry for more!

If you really want more throttle response, do like I did and switch to 5W-20 motor oil.

I've used K&N on other cars without any issues but I don't have one on my RX.

I would put a K&N air filter in my wife's Rx400h if it produced more power, returned better fuel economy, and was proven to be safe. Unfortunately, no one seems to see any improvement other than a change in sound. As for K&Ns being safe, they worked well in my previous Nissan, Mazdas, and Hondas; however oiled air filters are a big no-no for my VW TDI. The MAF is very sensitive so I stick to the OEM air filter.

Hi Dinomon

I know this thread is from years ago but did you end up getting this to fit? Finding myself in the same predicament!

I recently dropped a K&N Filter on my 330 and have not noticed anything unusual. There is a method to the filter installation.

Unfortunately the design of our filter chamber does not allow clear and free access to the bolt in the rear. Shame on the Toyota engineers.

There is a technique though. Ever since I have owned the car, I always dreaded the time to replace the air filter, because I know it will put up a fight.

When it came down to dropping the K&N, it did fight as usual. But I won, as usual as well.

Shame on jamming the wires in that corner, not allowing some swivel on the box, shame on the engineer! Maybe it was one way of preventing a simple owner DIY to a Dealer serviced item.

Just keep on trying, good luck.

Thanks mandyfig but that sadly doesn't help me. Fortunately, I have smallish hands and the right tools so the bolt on the back was pretty straightforward. Where I get stuck is trying to get the rear (firewall) corner clip to slide into it's socket. It feels like it's jamming on something, however, if I remove the air filter lid (and the hose it attaches to) the lid fits back on nicely. I fear I may have now cracked the air filter box lid due to my efforts! It just seems like this filter is too thick or something (or maybe I am!).

I had the same difficulty. When I installed mine, I had a friend that I did it for the same time. I was able to get mine done (still with bruised hands). When it came to my friend’s RX, for the love of me, I could not do it.

So I had to do an experiment, if I remember right, you can either flip which side it goes in, and there are unique features on the filter that tells you orientation.

So try it yourself. The upper right corner is the area that gives you misery. If you do not get it right, the hook will not sit right and therefor you will have a mis-assembly and you cannot get the bolts to sit.

The next time I have to check my filter, I will take pics. I might just do that this weekend.

I got there in there end, with the aid of a second pair of hands! Good thing with the K&N it'll be ages now before it needs cleaning!

Even before I changed my filter to K&N, I had a heck of a time replacing the filter. More so if you bought a non-OEM one. Bruised knuckles.

Now it will take a little while before I get to clean it.

I changed air filters for our '09 RX many times before w/no problem. When I switched to K&N, after bruising my knuckles for 15-20 minutes, just took it to my mechanic to install on my next oil change. Not sure if it was a placebo effect, but I believe with K&N I was getting 1-1.5 better MPGs.
