Default Which tires?

My Rx has 68K miles on it and I think the tires will need to be replaced within the next 5-7K miles. The car is at the shop still getting the heater core replaced for the third time right now but I think I'm going to be keeping her. I drove a few cars this weekend and I wasn't impressed. Either they were too sporty and rough riding for me or they were too small and low to the ground and I really felt myself longing to get my Lexus back from the shop!

I still want to test drive a few more cars but I have a feeling I'll be keeping my Lexus despite the problems I've had with it (the ignition problems and the heater core) and with the dealer. Anyway, I was looking for tire recommendations. Right now, I'm getting a lot of road noise and rattling from the rear of the vehicle, not sure if that's from the tires (the suspension checked out fine) or if it's just the age of the vehicle itself. I think I have the 18 inch tires on it now, and I believe they are Michelins.

I had that roar as well and a new set of tires quieted it down immediately. There are many excellent choices available. I've had good luck with Yokohama Avid Envigors, as I mentioned they are quiet and smooth.

They make a tire specifically for SUVs called the Parada...

We have bridgestone h/t duelers? I believe and they are great, little bi louder, but wear great and look good to. On a sidenote, you are having all these issues on an 07? I have a car from 2001 and it doesn't have have the issues you mentioned, care to elaborate on your issues? I don't want to run into them with the 08 i have

Regarding the Bridgestone Alenza, I guess it must depend upon driving habits. The Bridgestone Dueller H/L Alenza on our '04 RX330 are down to 4/32 (front) and 5/32 (rear). They have a whopping 27,000 miles on them. The good news, Discount Tire is giving me a credit of $108 per tire.

On Monday, I am having the Goodyear ComforTred Touring tire (70,000 mile warranty) put on. I was going to put the Conti DWS (50,000 mile warranty) on, but since our RX seems to chew up tires, I wanted something with a bit longer warranty. Will report back on how the Goodyear performs, but on Tirerack, it has excellent reviews.

That really surprises me as I have 40,000 miles on my Alenzas and they measure 9/32" with a tire gauge. I do 80/20 highway/city driving. I inflate to 32psi and love these tires. I should easily see 80-90k on the set.

Good to hear that you are getting some compensation for the early wear. These tires had a 65k tread wear guarantee and the UTQG rating was high at 600 The Goodyears you chose have a 640 rating and only 5,000 more mile warranty so they should not be much better.

Where are you driving and how aggressive is your driving style? Are the tires wearing evenly? Why do the rears have more tread depth than the fronts? How frequently do you rotate them?

From a historical perspective, purchased the car new in November 2003.

Two sets of Michelin MXV; each got ~35K before they were at the wear bar.

This was the second set of Alenza's, the first set got around 42K before hitting the wear bars. The current tires would probably make it to 35-37K if I took them down to 2/32's.

I rotate every 5-7K (I change the oil at the same time as rotation).

Tires are wearing even across the tire and I run the air pressure at 35psi.

As for driving patterns, it is the wife's vehicle. She mostly drives around town with occasional highway trips; I would say 75/25.

I recall that when I purchased the Alenzas they were classified as a "Highway" tire. Perhaps, that relates to the greater tread wear you are seeing? Yet the 65k warranty suggests that the tire should last longer. The Alenzas start out life with 13/32" depth and I've used 4/32' over 40,000 miles over mostly highway driving. My original Goodyears only ran 25k before they were down to 3/32". I decided not to use Goodyears again if I could help it, as they had no tread wear warrantee on the RSA's.

I don't understand why your rear tires have more tread depth than the front if you are rotating them every 5-7k. That doesn't make sense unless there is something amiss with the tires or the suspension.

Keep us posted on how the new tires work out for you.

Not sure what to say, I am not sure I have ever had all four tires wear even on any car I have ever owned. We handed the car down to family members, but I know our 88 Camry (which just turned 340,000 miles) has gone through many sets of tires ... sometimes the wear was even, sometimes not. Never really thought much about it since the wear was usually within 1/32.
