Default Navi Unit Ruining DVDs

Need some help to get Lexus to cover a repair on Navi unit.
Last week, I finally decided to update the Navi DVD in my 2007 RX 350. Unit had been working fine, but maps were out of date in some areas I travel regularly. Put in new DVD and initially seemed ok, but could not enter address for search, unit just hung up. Called and got suggestions from dealer of things to try, but nothing helped, in fact got worse. Took to dealer today, and turns out that reader arm in unit is scratching disk upon insertion, rendering them unreadable, so need new unit to tune of $1300.
My assumption is that this unit was faulty all along, and this problem only surfaced now, after warranty period, as this was the first time I changed the disk. Anyone have experience dealing with Lexus customer care? I am wonder what approach, if any is likely to be successful in getting some reimbursment for replacing the unit.
Thanks for any help.

Get a top of the line Garmin and buy the lifetime map updates for a fraction of the cost.

I certainly will for future auto purchaces, however, driving around with a nonfunctional screening staring at me for the next several years is not something I would be willing to tolerate, so I will bite the bullet and get the repair and hope at least some of it will be covered by Lexus. I certainly wish I would have updated the system while still under warranty and saved myself the hassle.

You might check in the audio forum for some insight. Or run an all forum search for more help, I can promise you someone on this board has already been there and done that.

Look on ebay and install yourself. Should unplug, unbolt, and reverse to install.
Unless you get really lucky, Lex will not cover it.
