Default 10K Oil Changes on Synthetic

Except for concerns about Toyota not honoring the warranty, is there any reason one could NOT safely go 10,000Mi between oil changes if using synthetic? (On an RX330 or 350)?

The oil filter. If you want to extend oil changes the oil and additives are not the problem but the oil filter construction could be the weak link. If going the synthetic route you may want to consider filters designed for synthetic oils such as K&N, Mobile 1 or Fram synthetic-Just my two cents.
I typically use K&N, last change I tried Mobile 1 m1-102 but the filter would not thread. So I'll be sticking with K&N

No reason at all not to, just change the filter at around 5K, then oil & filter again at 10K

The warranty thing is a pretty big concern imo. But if you want to go 10k OCI send off a sample for oil analysis at say 7500 miles, and see if the oil you want to use will last. www.blackstone-labs.com/

Oil changes are pretty cheap compared to engine problems. Especially if you DIY. And remember Toyota had some bad sludging issues with engines a few years back. I stick with the 5k oci, and just use dino oil.

Much more toward 10K than say with a 1st gen RX. You have better cooling passages among other things with the 2nd gen. However, it still is going to also depend on what oil you are running and how your driving style is.

Right now on my RX300 I run 7K changes on Castrol Syntec 0W30 on an oversized a K&N HP2009 oil filter. I am going to run a test on the 5W30 Pennzoil Ultra Euro for my next oil change (my main curiosity being any MPG difference, noise difference etc.).

I ran Mobil 1 5W30 (back before I changed to Pennzoil Platinum) to 8611 miles and the TBN was 2.0. So, that oil was close to being spent.

Just to be on the safe side, I now change the PP every 5K and the oil filter every 10K (I use either the Mobil-1 filter or the new Fram Xtended Guard).

My Dad was always on the safe side & changed oil every 1000 miles but as the oils got better & better he waited till 3000 even though they were saying 5000 & more with certain synthetics. That was years ago though. Now days your syntheitcs can go as much as 25000 & the filter the same. What will it be for the next generation? Lifetime maybe?? Who can say. But all we know today is the oils get better & better & lasting longer & longer with the new filtering consepts.

BMW is recommending (and many German cars) changed oil at 15,000. I'm changing on BMW 3-series after 12,000 miles (use only BMW = Castrol Long life oil). It's only 6.25 per qt. Mobil has one too 0W-40. Closes to European Castrol will be European formula by Castrol 5w-30. I may take a chance and will use BMW's oil in Lexus.

I`m sorry, but 10k on Synthetic in the RX ? The European vehicles have much larger oil sumps, along with fleece oil filters. Nooooo way will I go more than 5k on an oil change. Heck I usually do 3k. Call me old school.

Lexus is now recommending 10k oil changes on the 2010 RXs. I'm not concerned because I'll hit the time before the mileage. On the '04 and '99, I never went beyond 3-4k between oil changes. All service was done by the dealer.

BMW's go 15K on oil and filter.
10K is fine but for piece of mind I go 8K.

7~8K per synthetic oil and filter change. Can not go wrong with it. As long as you do this religiously, nothing will happen to the engine which will be cause for you to lose warranty.

Guys on BMW forum did analyzes of oil at 5,000; 10,000; 12,000 and 15,000.
So a very slight difference between 5,000 and 12,000 miles, but at 15,000 miles oil was almost lost all their requirement properties. Also one genuine there said, that he did a lot studies on motor oil so synthetic oil is developed some kind film by 7500 miles, so when you have replaced oil, you will destroyed that film again, so in the end the wear will be more then if you have changed oil each 12,000-15,000 miles. Just a piece of mind, on BMW forum a lot people with cars has more then 200,000 miles and the engines don't burn oil at all.

I am sort of old school as well. Years ago I was strictly 2-3000 on dino with any vehicle I had. I now always stick to the 5k limit. I and my engine just feel better I guess. Have been running Mobil 1 for awhile now. Don't know if its a bad thing, but I did not start running synthectic until my vehicles were up in miles.
