I Just Woke Up
Gas in our area hit $4/gal. today for regular.
WE seriously were going to upgrade to a '09 RX but I woke up this AM to the realization I HAVE to downsize. Our only hope is if, I don't know what our only hope is?
Being on a fixed income sucks, we thought retirement would allow us such luxurys like a classy new vehicle once in a while.
Got to go now, will be picking up alluminum cans on the side of the road to help pay for a gallon of fuel. Oh yes, our Mustang just sits in the garage now, only put 2K on it last year, will be less this year.

Sorry to hear of your frustration, but do carefully consider the following before you make your final decision.
After I retired I found that I used a lot less gasoline as I no longer was making a 60-70 miles RT per day commute into MKE. These days most of my driving is rural highway or freeway and gasoline is no longer that much of a concern for me even though I make an annual road trip to Florida and a few trips to MSP. I drive maybe 8,000-9,000 a year now. I guess I'd be hard pressed to give up the luxury, comfort and safety of the RX if it would only save me a few dollars on gas. My 2004 RX330 has cost me 11 cents per mile for gasoline over it's life.
The EPA estimates annual fuel costs for these 2008 vehicles (assuming 15,000 miles per year) to be;
Prius $864/year (.057/mi)
RX350 $2092/year (.139/mi)
RX400 $1590/year (.106/mi)
So you can calculate your expected costs for your driving experience.
If one were to choose a Prius (probably the best case economy vehicle in the market) one could expect to get maybe twice the gas milage, so fuel cost would be half. I would save maybe around $1,000 a year with gas at $4.00 a gallon. For me, I wouldn't want to drive around in a Prius to save about $20 a week. I don't feel that the the Prius is as safe as the RX in a collision. They don't make a 4WD Prius. Living in Wisconsin, I imagine you might agree that 4WD is a good thing in the winter. LOL! I can easily say after driving a Prius that it is not as satisfying a driving experience for me as my RX on many, many levels. While it is a very green vehicle it just doesn't match my needs for space, comfort or safety as well as my RX does.
It is a value thing and when I weigh all the things that are important to me I come to the conclusion that I want another RX. Have you considered the RX400 Hybrid? Since I seldom do any city driving any longer it doesn't make sense for me but if you live in the city it might be an alternative to consider.
BTW, where were you the Fire Chief and thank you for all the brave and courageous years of your life that you dedicated to protecting us.

I don't wanna be rude but it's only about 1 dollar for a liter of gas for you. Here in Europe in Estonia for example a liter of gas costs about 1,6 dollars and diesel even a bit more. It sure is expensive but we aren't cryin'
it was 1 dollar for us in the good ol' days
(about 5 years ago or something...)

(about 5 years ago or something...)Prices are up over 100% in a very short period of time. You WOULD be complaining if next year you're paying over 3.2 dollars per liter of gas.
An observation from a fellow retired Wisconsinite. I have a 2004 RX 330 AWD that I bought when I retired 5 years ago and a 1991 Toyota MR2 in the garage that I drive maybe 250 miles a year. LOL (It sure looks like new though as I'm sure your Mustang does.)

We'll just have to plan our trips better to get all our stops in on the same trips.
Looks like we'll be checking the dealers for a new RX, just have to get a great deal so it will help pay for the fuel. How about 10% off of List??
