45 miles from home
45 miles from home, wife pulls to shoulder of highway:
1. RPMs are going well into 4-5K range
2. no power seems to be getting to the wheels
3. after being on shoulder, can still shift into every gear, but no motion from transmission
Call tow service. ~90 after initial call —now at closed service center— the tow driver
1. reverses RX off the tow ramp
2. drives it to parking spot
WHAT????
Tow driver said "sometimes transmission plates can get overheated and need to cool off."
WHAT???
Dozens of 500+ mile trip over the 14 years I've owned this vehicle and never has this happened.
Things to note:
1. after reversing (back) up the slight downgrade we just travelled to get to motorcycle seller's driveway(~320 miles into trip), there was a strange "whirring" sound after shifting back into D.
2. heard same "whirring" as we left for home with slight delay in shifting. Noise —and delay— went away after ending warmed up.
3. since returning home, I've yet to check for codes
4. "HOT" transmission fluid level seemed fine upon checking. Admittedly didn't check "COLD" level.
Questions, comments, concerns and anything else considered are all most welcome. Thank you.
Transmission check is important .. drain and examination of fluid + what ever comes out is important.
The auto trans has a feature where the fluid coupling is bypassed and you get direct connection with the engine at cruising speed. I assume you were on a flat road and no auto shifting was happening.

No, I wasn't. I went to the (closed for the holiday) service center today. When I started the vehicle to drive it a quarter mile away (to see about having the codes checked), it immediately started with the "whirring" sounds. I just turned it off and went back home. I'll have the mechanic (hopefully) confirm the matter tomorrow.
